Critter Herding
Good evening, Shady people!
Well, Nanny Ogg is still in Scotland and checking in occasionally to give us updates on good food, gorgeous scenery and fun times! She will be returning to her writing and herding duties in a few weeks. I am thrilled to report lemay50 will be writing the Shade on 7/29 and 8/5. Thank you lemay! We could use a herder on Tuesdays as well, but our BYOC* format has been working pretty well. I encourage anyone interested to grab the brass ring! We’d be mighty grateful!!! 💙

The Epstein Files and Presidential Approval
✂️ Trump’s promise to expose the deep state and reveal a pedophile ring being operated by prominent Democrats isn’t exactly Barack Obama giving up on a public option in his health care legislation. But it’s as important to the people who make up Trump’s base as the public option was to some of Obama’s strongest supporters. In fact, given how it upends a central element of MAGA mythology about Donald Trump, it can be viewed as a betrayal. How can MAGA see Trump’s about-face as anything other than a defense of the perverse deep state behavior that he promised to expose? ✂️ After reaching historic levels of unpopularity in record time, he has counted on the unwavering allegiance of his MAGA core to prop him up. In major polls of job approval, Trump is hovering in the low forties. The loss of even a few percentage points of MAGA support could sink his approval numbers to 40% or even a bit below. That’s the Mendoza Line for politicians. With the Epstein reversal, Trump has now violated the key promises he made to the two groups that pushed him over the top last November. Soft supporters bought in to his promise to lower prices and the hardcore base expected him to be a deep state-wrecking superhero. Of course, neither promise was ever realistic. There was no way Trump or any president was going to wave his hands and lower prices. But he might have been able to stem the damage from making this grandiose promise had he not undermined the economy with his tariff decisions. And there was no way he was going to reveal the secrets of the deep state when the conspiracy theories that animate his base are based on lies. For once, those lies caught up with him. Right-wing social media won’t let the Epstein story go, and Trump is at a loss for what to do. So he finds himself employing the only defense he knows—going on the attack—only this time he’s using it against his own supporters by calling them weaklings and saying he doesn’t want their support. ✂️ Donald Trump is used to asserting that reality is whatever he says it is, which is why it is so noteworthy that his ability to dictate the terms of what his base believes is failing him now. He has lost control of the story, and the longer it spins, the greater and more enduring the effect will be on Trump’s overall public support.
This is the best news and I hope the furor keeps on and on and on. It is enjoyable watching as his stupid distractions get tossed out almost as soon as he or his sycophants utter them.

x I don’t think Trump is concerned about voters in the 18-24 bracket turning on him, they’re too old for him anyways — James Medlock (@jdcmedlock.bsky.social) July 23, 2025 at 9:09 PM 🤢 ===
The FAFO talk has died down, but I still think about it all the time. How could Latinos break for trump in 2024? Women? Anyone who depends on government programs? Well they did and here we are.
Some good news for birds!
Please click the link and read about wins in VT, CT, TX, VA and NY!
One of the stories involves VA and foam takeout containers. I’ll highlight that one here. Other stories tackle banning neonics (YAY!), wind turbine site selection, and horseshoe crab protection. These are all huge advancements to help birds. As go the birds, so go the humans. This is a very big deal!
The ban on expanded polystyrene foam takeout and beverage containers is finally going into effect in Virginia, thanks to leadership from state legislators and grassroots action! Legislation to ban these products passed in 2021, with implementation of the ban slated for 2023. In 2022, language in the budget bill delayed the implementation of the phaseout of these hard-to-recycle plastics, which can be accidentally ingested by birds and other wildlife. This year, Virginia's Governor proposed a budget amendment that would have further delayed this law from taking effect. This time, however, the proposal was struck down, and on July 1, 2025, the foam phaseout finally went into effect! Large chains must comply now, while smaller businesses have until July 1, 2026 to fully comply with the law. Bipartisanship and the voices of Virginians were critical to achieving this victory. Polystyrene foam food and beverage containers are a prolific source of litter in Virginia. This ban has the potential to beautify communities and reduce the presence of a deadly threat to birds — benefiting all Virginians!

The latest edition of the Blue Print is HERE
Last week, the DNC launched TrumpTax.Com to highlight how Republicans’ extreme tax and spending bill will directly increase costs for people all over the country. “The Trump Tax is the largest redistribution of wealth and the largest cut to health care in American history,” DNC Chair Ken Martin said in a statement. “While Trump steers the US economy toward a financial crisis, the Trump Tax is shuttering hospitals and nursing homes, skyrocketing energy bills, and exploding the deficit.” The website offers a host of information on how the bill will impact each state — including health care cuts, rural hospital closures, and electricity bill increases — all while billionaires get a giant tax cut. I encourage you all to check out the website and tell everyone you know about it. This is the kind of information we need to spread! Here is how Kentucky has been/will be impacted by the ugly bill: Kentucky Nearly 185,000 Kentuckians will lose health insurance

I am all about this one!
Self-care describes in a practical, person-centered way what we should all be doing to maintain our health, wellness and wellbeing. Through self-care people can be healthier and remain so into old age, managing minor ailments themselves. We can also better manage, delay or even prevent the appearance of lifestyle diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and many cancers.
I think it is critically important to have a positive attitude, to approach each day with something to look forward to, to eat healthy and to MOVE. Above all else, movement throughout each day keeps us from becoming sedentary, which leads to all kinds of health problems. Drink plenty of water daily. If there is some treat that makes you happy, by all means have it on occasion. Moderation is key. This clip embodies the idea of a positive outlook on life, which is one of the most important aspects of self care. 🥰 x x YouTube Video

On average, a person has two sets of cousins (once removed) on their parent's side and two sets of cousins on their grandparent's side. This number can vary widely, depending on the size and structure of a person's family. Some people may have many cousins, while others may have few or none.
I have never heard of this movie, but I like Ted Danson

The first drive-thru service is believed to have been at Red’s Giant Hamburg on Route 66 in Springfield, Missouri, in 1947. After the second world war, California sunshine and a love affair with automobiles spurred the growth of roadside businesses in the Golden State catering specifically to motorists. As America's first major drive-through hamburger chain, Jack in the Box® restaurants (founded in 1951) helped pave the way for a delicious new dining experience. x x YouTube Video

Tequila dates back to the Mesoamerican times around 1000 BC, when indigenous Mexican tribes would often harvest and ferment agave. It was not until 16th Century that the tequila we know today was first produced in a region that was not officially known as Tequila until 1666.

National Thermal Engineer Day is observed every year on 24 July to show the importance of advancing the thermal engineering industry and is provide the electronics industry with innovative, high-quality and cost-effective thermal management and its packaging solutions. Thermal engineers maintain, create, or repair mechanical systems that involve a heat transfer process into other forms of energy. Thermal energy is defined as the energy contained inside a system that manages its temperature. As per thermodynamics, the transfer of heat between various systems and the process of how the work is done is known as thermal energy. x x YouTube Video
