A news article July 23 reports this:
“At least 10 Palestinians have died of forced starvation in the past 24 hours in Gaza, bringing the death toll from hunger to 111, including at least 80 children, according to the territory’s Health Ministry.”
The article also says “Israeli forces continue bombarding Gaza as 109 aid groups call for action against Israel, warning that mass starvation is spreading across the enclave.”
The article quotes Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian representative at the United Nations:
“Israel has ravaged Gaza. It has destroyed nearly everything in that narrow strip of Palestinian land. But nearly 2 million human beings remain, including 1 million children. They must be saved,” Mansour said during a UN Security Council meeting in New York.
Mansour also said:
What’s unfolding in Gaza was “predictable, premeditated and planned”, but has been allowed to happen because of the impunity Israel enjoys. “Every day now, we are receiving heart-wrenching messages from Gaza, with a few words: ‘I am hungry … There is no food for my family. We are dying. Help us’.
Mansour asks the Security Council:
“What should we tell them? What should the Security Council tell them? That the whole world is against this starvation policy and yet, it is worsening? That no one wants to see people in Gaza starving, and yet, the world watches on as they die of hunger and thirst?” He added, “Are Palestinian lives not worth saving, or does Israeli supremacy extend as far as conferring upon Israel a right of life and death over the Palestinian people as a whole?”
Another article quotes Scott Lea, acting director in the occupied Palestinian territory for the International Rescue Committee, that the group has witnessed “a sharp rise in the number of children being rushed to hospitals because of malnutrition” in Gaza.
“Their small bodies are shutting down – they can’t breathe, their immune systems are collapsing, and they are highly vulnerable to infection. Their lives are hanging by a thread,” Lea said in a statement.
The director continued, “This is a man-made hunger crisis, driven by severe restrictions and a near-total blockade on aid and goods. It is preventable and it must end.”
UPDATE: Reuters has some pertinent quotes: www.reuters.com/...
The World Health Organization said on Wednesday, 21 children under the age of five were among those who died of malnutrition so far this year. It said it had been unable to deliver any food for nearly 80 days between March and May and that a resumption of food deliveries was still far below what is needed.
In a statement on Wednesday, 111 organisations, including Mercy Corps, the Norwegian Refugee Council, and Refugees International, said mass starvation was spreading even as tons of food, clean water and medical supplies sit untouched just outside Gaza, where aid groups are blocked from access.
