We need to talk about Medhi Hasan vs the MAGA Neo Nazis [1]

I doubt you haven’t seen this yet because it's blowing up in the interwebs, but former MSNBC host Medhi Hasan appeared on the Jubilee Webcast “Surrounded” and took on 20 “Far Right Conservatives.” During the Broadcast, Medhi eventually discovered that several of these people were not just far right, they were out-and-out Neo-Nazis Fascist who worshipped Franco and believed in implementing a Catholic Theocratic Autocracy on America.
I’m not going to show the entire broadcast (here’s a link if you dare) because it’s fucking vile, and long, but here are a few clips via the Damage Report.
I think the most interesting part of this discussion is where “Connor” claims that the...
Liberals are going to do everything to help their own group, so why shouldn’t we do the same for our people?
This is not just a Nazi idea, it’s part of the entire mindset of the MAGA people. It’s why they’re so upset about DEI and immigrants — they think helping those people somehow hurts them. They think these things are somehow attacks on them.
So why shouldn’t I attack back? Why shouldn’t I hurt them back?
Everything for them is Zero-Sum. You can’t give to one without taking from another. This answers the question I posed a few diaries back: Why are MAGAs and Trump so cruel, mean and hateful?
The answer is they think they have to be for their own self-defense. They think immigrants are criminals. They think they are free-loaders who are “draining the blood of this country.” They think they’re “eating the cats, eating the dogs” and of course “Rapists” who engage in human trafficking just like Jeffrey Epstein.
What they don’t see is that the world isn’t zero-sum. They don't see that immigrants are a net benefit, generating over $100 billion in tax revenue, while they aren’t allowed government benefits like SNAP, Medicaid and Section 8. Hasan points out that Migrants are 80% more likely to start businesses that will generate $9 trillion in GDP over the next decade. They enrich our country and unless you naturally speak Chumash, Cherokee or Oglala Sioux — everyone else here is an Immigrant or one of their descendants.
But most importantly, they don’t seem to understand that progressive values don’t take anything away from them; they only add to the whole.
Since the above clip aired it turns out that that particular chowder-head has lost apparently his job.
So yay, good things can happen to bad fucking people.
Naturally, he whines that this is unfair “political discrimination” and that it’s “Cancel Culture”. Yeah, Boo Hoo. Some punks deserve to be cancelled. Laughing hysterically about 6 Million Jews, Gypsies and LGBT persons being gassed and acid bathed is not legitimately humor. It’s fucking genocide.
There is a line; you crossed it, buddy.
On the other hand, shutting these people down from the public sphere is probably a large reason why they’ve become so brazen and resentful. Not being able to drop the N-word every five seconds sticks in their craw. They’re tired of holding it in and now it’s busting out all over.
This is part of a fairly illuminating discussion about the entire situation that Hasan had with Tim Miller of the Bulwark.
I think they cover some interesting ground. First, obviously, it can no longer be said that there isn’t a direct common cause between MAGAs and Nazis. They really are practically indistinguishable. Hasan states, quoting Max Boot:
The White Nationalist used to be fringe of the Republican party. Now it’s a White Nationalist party with a fringe of Republicans.
And he’s exactly right. Tim Miller, who used to work for Mitt Romney, is a perfect example of this. A few days ago you had Greg Gutfeld trying ironically to repurpose the term “Nazi” in the same way “THE BLACKS” have redefined and repurposed the “N-Word.”
So that’s one thing, then, you have others on the show with Hasan who were espousing the “Great Replacement Theory,” which Trump and Musk have pushed. You had one person who told Hasan he should “leave the country” even though he’s an American citizen.
Another young lady came up to him and said, “Do you support Immigrants or Americans?” Hasan responded with “I’m an immigrant and an American”, and then she goes, “Americans are born here.” The discussion goes on and off the rails when she admits her parents are immigrants who became naturalized. So she calls them “Americans”, but she won’t say that about Hasan, even though he’s been naturalized too. This is more of the standard cognitive dissonance were used to from MAGAs. The reason she can’t admit Hasan is an American is because she’s a fucking racist, but unlike “Connor,” she can’t quite admit it out loud, or even to herself.
In his discussion with Miller, they discuss the issue of platforming people this radical. Should we ignore them or should we confront them? Does it help to shut them down with facts and logic or does it hurt when they’re going to grab clips and go “Dude, You Dunked on HASAN!!” And that’s a debatable point. Hasan says this:
On MSNBC, I wouldn’t debate election deniers. Then 2024 came along that’s not gonna work because you’re not gonna be able to debate a Republican. The purity tests don’t work in an age when things are so fluid. [‘’’] You can not exclude one party from all political debate.
Because if they aren’t a Nazi, they’re Neo-Nazi adjacent — blatant bigotry and racism isn’t a deal breaker for them because they share the same views and values as Nazis. Call them Nazi-lite.
Now, like Gutfeld, they want to be called “Nazi.” It’s like “Nazi Please?”
Another important issue they discuss, but don’t solve, is the issue of radicalization. Now that so many of these people have been radicalized, and led down the primrose path of White Nationalism by their families or by the Algorithms of TikTok and Facebook within social media or ideologically biased material (as Dylann Roof was), how exactly do we undo this indoctrination?
Confronting them doesn’t work; they only retreat further into the cult. I’ve seen some success with outreach that simply shows them that you are a good person, not the stereotype that they imagine and when they see for themselves that what they've been told and believe is a lie, they start to realize that all of it is a lie. But that's something you can’t deliberately give someone; they have to find it on their own. Here’s an example of one woman who hit a wall of anti-LGBT hate inside the Mormon church and managed to deradicalize herself. In her case, it was a process and it took time — but once a seed was planted it started to grow.
This nation is now full of Radicalized people. At a certain point, they have to be woken up, but what’s it gonna take? If it has to happen one-on-one personally that’s going to take forever — how can this process of radicalization be derailed en masse?
Is that even possible?
In the meanwhile, we need to present a robust alternative to the Fascist vision that has engulfed these people. We need to have these discussions. We need Democrats who can go on Fox News and clean their clock. We need Democrats who can go on Joe Rogan and open his eyes to good progressive ideas. Don’t let our opposition explain who were are — because they’ll just call us “Marxist, Socialist, Pedophiles who do Lawfare” — we need to show who we are. We need to be in the discussion not sitting on the sidelines refusing to engage.
We need to fight for the working class and let them see us fighting for them just as hard as we fight for migrants and the marginalized. They’ve been marginalized too — we’re for helping everyone, not just a few.
They won’t know that unless we tell them.
