Sharing Hope for Virginia: Even in Republican-held Districts we are finding eager & enthus Dems [1]

Hope Springs from Field PAC began knocking on doors again on March 1st. We target Democrats and unaffiliated voters with a systematic approach that reminds them not only that Democrats care, but Democrats are determined to deliver the best government possible to all Americans. The voters we talk to continue to tell us they come away more invested in governance and feel more favorably towards Democrats in general because of our approach.

Obviously, we rely on grassroots support, so if you support field/grassroots organizing, voter registration (and follow-up) and our efforts to protect our voters, we would certainly appreciate your support:

Hope Springs from Field understands that volunteer to voter personal interactions are critical. Knocking on doors has repeatedly been found to be the most successful tactic to get voters to cast a ballot and that is the goal of what we do.

We’ve been asking voters if they approve of the sudden and deep cuts in federal programs and agencies. 1% of the Virginia voters who responded said they viewed these cuts in a favorable light, 38% disapproved. And not just because of the frequent talk about cuts to Medicaid, but especially the loss of (or threat of the) federal jobs. “These are our families,” one voter told a volunteer. “How can they do this?” It has every one on edge, even families that don’t have someone of the federal payroll and it’s been that way since president felon came (back) into office.

4% of the voters we talked to had a favorable impression of the job Trump was doing. Important to remember that we are knocking on more doors of unaffiliated voters than Democrats in these GOP-held districts. 53% of the voters we talked to this week disapproved. 56% of voters expressed approval of the job that Mark Warner was doing on Saturday (which is the highest number for anyone we’ve asked about this year) and 4% said they disapproved. 3% said they approved of the job Gov. Youngkin was doing; 53% said they disapproved. A couple of voters wondered why Youngkin was out West since there’s work to be done here in Virginia.

Hope Springs volunteers registered 5 new voters and re-registered 12 voters. A couple of these asked when Early Voting begins for the November election.

In Virginia, 206 voters filled out Constituent Service Request forms. We sent completed CSRs to Democratic elected officials responsible for the requested functions, but if the appropriate office is held by a Republican, we still send it along. For Democrats, though, we encourage them to reach out immediately to the voter who filled out the Constituent Service Request forms and let them know they are working on the issue. This credit-taking is enormously valuable to the Democratic office-holder.

Politico reports that “Veterans of Virginia campaigns in both parties are skeptical that Democrats have the sort of energy they enjoyed in 2017.” This may be true, but we lost that campaign. That’s not the kind of “energy” we need to win in 2025. Virginia is one of the states where we are asking for volunteers to send out postcards to NEW VOTERS during this year’s election. If you can help in that area, you can find our diary about Postcards to New Voters for 2025 November Elections at that link.

5 voters filled out Incident Reports on Saturday. Incident Reports are used to plan Election Protection activities, and will be combined with other, historical incidents and handed over to District and State Attorneys, Attorney Generals and the DoJ Civil Rights Division right before Election Day as a precaution against Election Day Incidents in November. Past polling place activity is a predictor of future voter intimidation or suppression activity.

The Commonwealth Poll found that the cost of living continues to dominate as voters’ top concern in Virginia as we approach the election, with reproductive rights and immigration also ranking high among Virginians’ priorities.

We knock on the doors of Democratic and Independent voters and use a voter-driven approach to guide them through the Issues Survey, the CSR and Incident Report. We record questions voters raise with a Q(uestion)-slip and record other relevant observations on an Observations form. Q-slips are sent to the relevant Democrat to respond to and Observations are entered into VAN. At every door, we leave a piece of “show the flag” lit, something that tells them we were there and hopefully reinforces the Democratic brand. The lit focuses on the things voters told us were important to them last fall, aiming to appeal to every voter.
