The money angle The money angle: We learned this week that the Republican National Committee is sitting on vastly more cash than its Democratic counterpart. The RNC has nearly $81 million in cash on hand. The DNC? Just $15 million. And while the Q2 sums raised by the NRCC and DCCC are roughly similar, there too, Republicans have the financial edge: $32 million to $29 million. Democrats attribute that fundraising disparity to Trump’s brand strength — and the relative weakness of the Dems’ own. “You’re seeing Democratic institutions like the DNC have some trouble raising grassroots money because these institutions are so tied to the national party brand …. which to state the obvious is not a popular brand right now,” one prominent Democratic strategist tells Playbook. Now, exploring who has the upper hand as the midterms inch closer is something of a Rorschach test, with people seeing what they want to. But Republicans like what they have seen in polling in response to the question “cares more for needs of people like you,” where the parties are tied for the first time in three decades (though this was long before the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill). And congressional Democrats, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released last week, have an approval rating of 19 percent. www.politico.com/…
Lawler Will Seek Re-election to House, Forgoing Run for N.Y. Governor Representative Mike Lawler, Republican of New York, plans to seek re-election in his crucial Hudson Valley swing seat next year rather than run for governor, he told The New York Times on Wednesday. Mr. Lawler had been openly exploring a campaign against Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, for months. Many Republicans viewed the congressman, who has consistently won in a Democratic-leaning district, as their most viable candidate in a left-leaning state. But with Republicans preparing to defend a minuscule House majority, he was under intense pressure from President Trump and congressional allies to run for re-election. The president made his views clear in a private meeting at the White House last week, according to a person familiar with the conversation. www.nytimes.com/…
New Yorkers to Vote on Affordable Housing Fast Track and Election Calendar This Fall The Charter Revision Commission voted to place five proposals on the November ballot — four aimed at simplifying and speeding up the development approval process for affordable housing, and one that would move local elections to align with state and federal races. “We have worked exhaustively to find solutions that meet this moment, and I am proud to say that we have a set of proposals before us that can set us on the path towards a more equitable and affordable city,” said the commission’s chair and CEO of Robin Hood Richard Buery Jr. ahead of the vote on Monday. ******* The final proposal would move local elections to even-numbered years, aligning them with state and federal races — a shift that the commission hopes will boost voter turnout while also saving the city $42 million every two years. The measure passed with near unanimous support, opposed by only former state Sen. Diane Savino, who argued that the issue requires the state legislature’s approval and that local races would be overshadowed by higher-profile elections. www.thecity.nyc/…
Kansas Sen. Ethan Corson enters race for Democratic Party’s nomination for governor TOPEKA — State Sen. Ethan Corson announced Tuesday the decision to seek the Kansas Democratic Party’s nomination for governor with a campaign focused on improving education, lowering taxes and creating jobs. Corson, a Fairway attorney elected to the Kansas Senate in 2020, said he was committed to advancing bipartisan leadership in state government. “I’m not interested in the partisan battles you see on cable news,” he said in a statement. “Kansans want leaders who work together, regardless of political party, to get things done. That’s exactly what I’ve done in the state Senate, and that’s the kind of commonsense, bipartisan leadership I’ll bring to the governor’s office.” kansasreflector.com/…
Washoe County Commissioner Alexis Hill plans to run for governor Washoe County Commission Chair Alexis Hill, a Democrat, told The Nevada Independent on Monday that she plans to formally launch a run for governor in the coming weeks. The surprising development marks Hill, 42, as the second major Democrat to plan a run for the seat, setting up a competitive primary for the challenge to incumbent Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo. Hill will likely square off against incumbent Attorney General Aaron Ford, who announced intentions to run in December. Ford has spent six years in the statewide role and previously served in the Legislature, culminating in the top-ranking position of Senate majority leader. thenevadaindependent.com/…
Former California mayor is back for a rematch with Democrat Josh Harder Republican Kevin Lincoln, who came within 4 points of unseating Democratic Rep. Josh Harder in California’s 9th District last year, is making another run for the competitive seat in the Central Valley. “As a Marine, I learned the value of service and sacrifice,” Lincoln, the former mayor of Stockton, said Tuesday in a statement launching his campaign. “As a mayor, I took on the status quo and fought to make our city safer, more affordable and more prosperous,” he said. “Now, I’m stepping forward once again because our families deserve a strong voice in Washington D.C. that understands their struggles and will deliver real results for the Valley.” rollcall.com/…
