Renewable Tuesday: Who Knew about Global Warming When? [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Global Warming from the greenhouse effect was discovered over and over, starting centuries ago, before it entered general public consciousness. Then, of course, it ran into the wall of corporate denial that we know since poisonous patent medicines, lead, tobacco, acid rain, and so on. Clair Patterson discovered in the 1960s that lead from gasoline had been getting into human bodies and wrecking brains since the 1920s. Lead pipes and lead in wine have been suggested as causes for the collapse of the Roman Empire.

History of climate change science

At the rate we are currently adding carbon dioxide to our atmosphere (six billion tons a year), within the next few decades the heat balance of the atmosphere could be altered enough to produce marked changes in the climate—changes which we might have no means of controlling even if by that time we have made great advances in our programs of weather modification.

A paper published in Nature in 1972 accurately predicted the next 30 years of global warming

1972 Munich Re-insurance The signature of Global Warming turned up in actuarial analyses of claim data from Munich Re’s customer insurance companies for climate damage—more and worse storms, fire, flood, drought, rising seas.

2011 DOD Defense Science Board published guidance and recommendations on adapting and mitigating against the implications of climate change to national and international security, and continued to update those warnings and plans until after Trump appointed Hegseth as Defense Secretary and the Senate confirmed him.

On the other side, see, of course, Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming.

President Jimmy Carter, a nuclear engineer in the Navy, put solar hot water heaters on the White House roof. President Ronald Reagan, a Hollywood hack in the pay of the Fossil Fuel industry, took them down.

Industry-paid denialists twisted the phrase “junk science” to be their label for real science. Republican pollster and proud Orwellian Frank Luntz told Republicans always to call Global Warming “Climate Change”, which would be less frightening. The climate has been changing since the oceans rained down from the atmosphere billions of years ago, while Global Warming has only been observed since the 1850s.
