Jon Stewart Blasts His Bosses Over the Firing of Colbert with a Choir Telling Them Where to Get Off [1]

Last week Stephen Colbert announced that the corporate wankers who run Paramount were canceling his show at the end of the current season. So come May of 2026 there will be no more "Late Night with Stephen Colbert." It's a decision that ends 30 years of the show that David Letterman began, and became the number one rated program in its time period after Colbert took over.

Paramount and CBS have said that the reason for the cancelation was "purely financial." But that doesn't align with the fact that it is the top rated late-night shows and, if there were financial issues, they could be addressed with measures to reduce costs and increase revenue. Furthermore, if it were purely financial they would have made the decision, but not announced it until next March.

The only reason to make this announcement now is to grease the wheels for their pending multibillion dollar merger, for which they need the approval of the Trump administration ASAP. But the corporatists didn't bother to try to resolve any financial matters. Instead, they capitulated to Dear Leader Donald Trump, who couldn't have been happier...

On Monday night Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show" expressed his feelings about the cancelation of Colbert, his friend and colleague who began his television career on "The Daily Show." It was a moving - and hilarious - half hour of passion and outrage and courage (video below). The monolog was not just a tribute to Colbert, but a condemnation of the forces that fired him. Stewart said in part that...

"The fact that CBS didn't try to save their number one rated network late-night franchise, that's been on the air for over three decades, is part of what's making everybody wonder: Was this purely financial? Or maybe the path of least resistance for your $8 billion merger. Was killing a show that you know rankles a fragile and vengeful president, so insecure, suffering terribly from a case of chronic penis insufficiency - truly it's a viscous disease. I believe CBS lost the benefit of a doubt two weeks prior when they sold out their flagship news program to pay an extortion fee to said president."

Stewart noted that the multibillion dollar value that the media companies enjoy is derived from shows like Colbert, and that if they continue along a path of canceling them in favor of "gruel so flavorless that you will never again be on the boy-king's radar, then why will anyone watch you? And you are f**cking wrong!"

Stewart also pointed out that capitulating to Trump is futile, because he will only want more. Trump is even suing his main media benefactor, Rupert Murdoch, the owner of Fox News. Which is the network that Stewart correctly observed "spends 24 hours a day blowing Trump. And it's not enough. Imagine suing someone mid-blow." Stewart went on to shine the light onto media corporations that have a fear "that is gripping all of America's institutions at this very moment..."

"Institutions that have chosen not to fight the vengeful and vindictive actions of our pubic hair doodling commander-in-chief. This is not the moment to give in. I'm not giving in. I'm not going anywhere. I think. So to those institutions, those corporations, advertisers, universities and law firms, all of them, if you still think that bending the knee to Trump will save you, I have one thing to say: Sack the f**k up!"

Following that, Stewart launched into a musical rendition, backed by a gospel choir, of the message that he wants to make clear to those cowardly, un-American institutions..."Go F**k Yourself!" Which is a sentiment that Colbert shared...

x Stephen Colbert replies to Trump’s post on Truth Social: “How dare you sir? Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism? Go fuck yourself.” — Phil Lewis (@phillewis.bsky.social) 2025-07-22T04:20:24.439Z

For his part, Trump is gloating about Colbert's cancelation, and hoping for more to come. He delights in the hardship of others, especially if he can assume the "credit" for it. On Tuesday morning he posted a typically puerile comment on his failing Twitter ripoff, Truth Social, saying that...

"The word is, and it’s a strong word at that, Jimmy Kimmel is NEXT to go in the untalented Late Night Sweepstakes and, shortly thereafter, Fallon will be gone. These are people with absolutely NO TALENT, who were paid Millions of Dollars for, in all cases, destroying what used to be GREAT Television. It’s really good to see them go, and I hope I played a major part in it!"

Sadly, while Trump is wrong about his assessment of their talent, he may not be wrong about the fate that awaits Kimmel and Fallon. And you can add to that list Seth Myers and, of course, Jon Stewart himself. After all, his show airs on Comedy Central, which is also owned by Paramount. We'll see.

It's heartening to see, in the meantime, that Stewart is not cowed by the cowardly Trumpian corporatists. And it's pretty certain that wherever any of these valiant entertainers end up, they will rise to ever higher levels of popularity and influence. In fact, it may be a blessing in disguise.
