Writing: It’s all it’s cracked up to be and more! [1]

I love writing. It’s the only thing I think I’m any good at.

And, I need to get this right out front: I’m not looking to earn, get, receive any awards or accolades for doing so. That’s not what I’m after.

Where writing’s concerned, I’ve been given a fair shake. I could not ask for any more, so I don’t.

Most that I’ve met and had the pleasure of working with or under in the business, have made my experience rewarding and made me just want to go on writing more and more. (Disclosure: I’ve experienced that in so few other fields that I’ve worked. But it wasn’t just that; they, at the same time, made me want to get better at my craft, which, I trust after all these years, I have. And, I never gotten reprimanded, scolded or excoriated when I wrote something that they spotted that wasn’t written just right. In fact, in responding to that very situation once, a former boss admonished: “Once it’s on the printed page, it’s forever!” I tried to let that mantra be my guiding light in writing).

I once wrote an article where I had interviewed two experts in their field. I recorded their statements via tape recorder so they could in no way, shape or form argue the point that what was published was the content verbatim that each provided to me, respectively. I did my job.

The problem arose when the article appeared in print. Subsequently, I was contacted by one of the experts who explained that the content that the other expert provided was incorrect. I can’t get into the specifics. What I will say is that the one expert who brought the matter to my attention had the option of writing a letter to the editor of the periodical the article in question was published in explaining the situation. Not to sound like a hard-nose, but at that point the matter was really out of my hands. This was the only time that something on this order had ever happened in the context of my carrying out my reporter responsibilities. These types of things can happen and have happened. Hopefully the matter got resolved.

What I really relish about writing is that interruption is an impossibility, not like what’s possible in, say, a podcast where an on-air guest is being interviewed by host and one cuts the other person off, whether deliberately or unintentionally. Probably why I neither watch nor listen to podcasts.

Also when I write I get to work at my own pace. And l’m allowed to pick the topic of my choice to write on. That’s the real beauty of writing. There is just so much right about writing.

On writing, there is virtually nothing not to like.

Writing: My favorite pastime. It’s both what I enjoy most and do best.
