My Daughter Doesn’t Know We’re Hiding: A Father’s Fight to Stay [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

He’s not a criminal.

He’s not hiding from justice.

He’s a construction worker and the full-time caregiver of a disabled daughter—and the only thing standing between him and stability is $500.

I know this man personally. I’ve looked him in the eye. I’ve seen the quiet exhaustion on his face, the way he speaks gently to his child, the way he holds all of it together with hands that are cracked and raw from work.

His daughter doesn’t understand why their world has shrunk to four walls.

Why they don’t go to the store anymore.

Why they no longer stop at her favorite restaurant.

Why going outside could mean losing her father forever.

“She sees the commercials for Target and smiles,” he told me.

“She doesn’t ask to go. But she looks at me like she’s wondering… did I do something wrong?”

This is what cruelty looks like in real time.

A Permit Within Reach—And a Lawyer Holding It Hostage

He did everything right. He followed the rules. He applied for a work permit through an attorney. It’s approved. It’s ready to go.

But he can’t access it.

The lawyer—like far too many immigration attorneys—won’t release the permit or file final paperwork until the remaining $1,400 in fees is paid in full. As of today, we’ve raised $900. We need $500 more to cross the finish line.

This is a legal process designed to delay, extract, and exploit.

This is what “doing it the right way” gets you when you’re poor and undocumented: more walls. More fees. More fear.

How You Can Help

This isn’t a story about charity.

It’s a story about mutual survival.

It’s a story about how we treat the people who raise our buildings and raise their children in the same breath.

If you want to be part of something real—if you believe that no parent should lose everything over a $500 balance—then please help.

Donate here (type: “work permit” into your note/memo) and 100% of what you give goes directly to this father:

I wish I could show you her face.

I wish I could let you hear how she laughs when he carries her around their tiny home like it’s a parade float.

But I can’t.

Because even this story puts them at risk.

So I’m asking you—from one human being to another—to believe me when I say: this father is worth saving.

Let’s show her that her father isn’t alone.
