Former Suffolk County Executive Patrick Halpin announces congressional bid for seat held by Andrew Garbarino Former Suffolk County Executive Patrick Halpin announced Tuesday he has launched a campaign to challenge Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-Bayport) in the 2nd Congressional District next year. Halpin, 72, a Democrat who lives in Oak Beach, will attempt to revive a political career that began in his 20s and ended three decades ago before he segued into the private sector. "I’m not running to make noise," Halpin said in a statement. "I’m running to get things done. Washington’s broken, but I’ve seen what happens when you put your head down and do the work — when you ignore the noise and focus on people." www.newsday.com/…
Democrat Joe Jaworski to run for Texas attorney general again Joe Jaworski, an attorney and former Galveston mayor, is running for Texas attorney general again, three years after making an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination to become the state’s top civil lawyer. Jaworski will face another competitive primary this cycle, with state Sen. Nathan Johnson, D-Dallas, launching his own bid for attorney general earlier this week. Since his 2022 runoff loss, Jaworski said he has spent much of the last three years reflecting on how he can best serve Texas, as well as building name recognition through social media and a radio show. www.texastribune.org/…
The GOP shadow primary President Donald Trump never ran for governor, yet he stands to play kingmaker in his native state. Shut out of power for a generation, New York Republicans want Trump to help them avoid a damaging gubernatorial primary in this deep blue state. “The president’s voice is going to be very important,” Erie County GOP Chair Michael Kracker told Playbook. “I expect him to weigh in for his preference. That’s going to go a long way in helping us avoid a very long and costly primary and focus on the task at hand.” Republicans desperately want to avoid a replay of 2022, when Lee Zeldin — the prohibitive favorite for the GOP nomination — was challenged by Rob Astorino, Andrew Giuliani and Harry Wilson. Zeldin won, but he moved to the right, spent heavily to clinch the nomination and lost to Gov. Kathy Hochul by 6 points. www.politico.com/…
Democrats’ 2024 Autopsy Is Described as Avoiding the Likeliest Cause of Death The Democratic National Committee’s examination of what went wrong in the 2024 election is expected to mostly steer clear of the decisions made by the Biden-turned-Harris campaign and will focus more heavily instead on actions taken by allied groups, according to interviews with six people briefed on the report’s progress. The audit, which the committee is calling an “after-action review,” is expected to avoid the questions of whether former President Joseph R. Biden Jr. should have run for re-election in the first place, whether he should have exited the race earlier than he did and whether former Vice President Kamala Harris was the right choice to replace him, according to the people briefed on the process so far. Nor is the review expected to revisit key decisions by the Harris campaign — like framing the election as a choice between democracy and fascism, and refraining from hitting back after an ad by Donald J. Trump memorably attacked Ms. Harris on transgender rights by suggesting that she was for “they/them” while Mr. Trump was “for you” — that have roiled Democrats in the months since Mr. Trump took back the White House. www.nytimes.com/…
More than a year out from the 2026 midterms, how much have N.Y.’s battleground congressional candidates raised? The incumbents in New York’s competitive congressional districts are banking sizable campaign cash, more than a year out from the 2026 midterm elections. New York was a critical battleground for control of the House last cycle. Democratic pickups in battleground districts across the state helped their party keep the margins close in the GOP-controlled U.S. House. So far, few of the battleground incumbents have garnered notable challengers – with the exception of New York’s 17th congressional district in the lower Hudson Valley. There, seven Democrats have launched bids to take on incumbent Republican Congressman Mike Lawler, who is now serving his second term. ny1.com/…
