Good Trouble Lives On in Westchester, Los Angeles: John Lewis Gave Us a Lesson in Courage. [1]

When I first learned of this protest, set for 4:30 pm, Thursday, a few blocks from the airport, I wasn't sure how well it would work. I imagined gridlock, with angry drivers worried about missing flights -- or just getting home.
I was pleasantly surprised: No traffic jam, lots of supportive honks and thumbs up from drivers. A healthy crowd of about 500 showed up, populating all 4 corners of the intersection. The wide sidewalks were perfect for this sized crowd.
Lots of Epstein talk, as there were several signs noting Trump’s close friendship with a wealthy child molester. Lots of ICE bashing, as this is L.A., after all -- and lots of wondering which pillar of our democracy Trump is going to attack next.
I had been noticing a steady increase in younger participation in these things recently, but Thursday it was mostly well-seasoned citizens.
I heard lots of respect, admiration and appreciation for the late congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis. The clear message I get from the life and work of John Lewis is that each of us must conquer our fear. Courage does not mean "fearlessness." Real courage is to be afraid, and to do the right thing anyway, fully aware of the potential consequences. But it doesn't require anything close to "courage" to come out to these demonstrations.
My only goal in making these videos is to try persuade folks who have never been to one of these protests to try it. The people who show up are not wild-eyed radicals or reckless bomb throwers. They are not seething with anger and resentment. Frankly, most folks seem to have a good time.
If you know someone who has never been to to an anti-MAGA protest, you might try again to persuade them.
They can pick out a small town protest, and drive by first to make sure the setup feels right. Then just go.
They will probably have a great time.
