A NJ Congressional Candidate on PBS/NPR Funding Cuts [1]

Date: 2025-07-18
My friend Michael Roth is running for Congress in NJ07...a critical swing district for the 2026 midterm elections. He released this statement today (July 18, 2025):
I'm truly disheartened by the congressional vote to eliminate federal funding for NPR and PBS. It feels like a real blow, not just to these institutions, but to all of us who rely on them. For so many years, public broadcasting has been a constant in our lives, bringing us everything from the joy of "Sesame Street" for our kids to the thoughtful discussions of "All Things Considered" that help us understand the world. It's the kind of programming you just don't find anywhere else – commercial-free, dedicated to education, culture, diverse points of view, and reliable information. This isn't just about a budget line item; it's about losing a vital part of what makes our communities richer and more informed. So many smaller, local public radio and TV stations, especially in rural areas, depend on this federal support to keep their lights on.
Pulling the rug out from under NPR and PBS is short-sighted and an abandonment of the public good.
In my district, NJ07, Republic Congressman Thomas Kean Jr. has just voted in favor of a $1.1 billion clawback of funds from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. To suddenly pull the rug out from under NPR and PBS is short-sighted and an abandonment of the public good. We're losing access to something truly special, something that has always been there to educate, enlighten, and bring us together. I oppose these cuts and deeply hope we can find a way to restore essential support to these national treasures.
Michael Roth
