Good Trouble Rally Report [1]

This space is for all who want to share reports of today’s Good Trouble events.
My area, western northern Virginia, voted overwhelmingly for Trump again in 2024. Now, as a still quite rural area dependent upon medicaid, medicare, ACA, and other forms of government assistance, we are about to be overwhelmed by the pain of the policy the maladministration is inflicting. Not everyone here is uninformed, uncaring or unwilling to do something about that.
I’ve written before, in either comments or a diary, about turnout for No Kings Day and Hands Off events here where we had very good turnout, even in lousy weather.
Today’s Good Trouble rally, sponsored by the local League of Women Voters and NAACP chapters as well as a local group, Winchester Worth Fighting For, followed in the same vein. It was held from 6 — 8PM this evening. I was a little worried that attendance would be light being due to people not being able or perhaps too tired to show up after work. I had a pressed day and was stressing about getting work done I needed to do. I would imagine there were others in my same situation.
However, I knew providing my visible and vocal support was important, so, off I went. And to my delight, I would estimate about 500 people showed in Winchester for the event. My spirits were definitely rallied.
The attendees skewed older but there were a notable number of younger people, including socialist and communist party young adults. Who knew they were here?
Lots of people had great signs, our speakers were good and we had music. I am hoping that many came away with a renewed sense of energy and urgency.
We also had a food drive for a local food bank, and many donations were made.
There were a few Trump supporters around but only one person even tried to cause a problem. He told us that our having a rally on a public square (with a permit and sheriff’s deputies) was “communism”. One woman calmly said “Oh, no, this is democracy.” At hat point he started to walk away. Unfortunately, one of the attendees called after him something like “Yeah, keep walking” causing him to turn around. Why can’t some understand that de-escalation is key? Luckily, he left again after one retort.
If I can get an official number on attendees or any local press coverage, I will share it in an update.
I hope that many of you were able to attend an event in your area. I’d love to hear about it if you did.
