Of views…
You stand at your window
You talk of the trees and the flowers
You talk of the grass and the sun
And you find your scenery
So beautiful and peaceful
You do not understand why
I’m complaining…
It’s rather simple really
My window doesn’t open
On your personal garden
----
My window shows a different scene
One filled with weeds and bugs
It’s crawling with fog and smog
We live in the same house
But we are in different rooms
You have the premium view
I have the back alley view
I’ve tried to get another room
But while many are empty
None are available to me
----
I’ve often visited your room
Admired your interior décor
Admired your window’s view
You’ve never been to my room
Always a ready excuse
To avoid coming down
Come down and visit awhile
I want you to see my view
And point out the beauty
You think I’m failing to see
----
Your garden has been upkept
Cleaned, trimmed and beautified
By aids and gardeners, you do not know
Who unseen and invisible to you
Tend to your garden’s needs
But the superintendent has neglected
To do the bare minimum on my side
As a matter of fact
Your trash ends up on my yard
And that’s a fact of life
----
We have different points of view
Because we have different view points
Your window opens on the dream
Mine opens on the nightmare.

Check Reality
It’s true you and me are both Americans
Both of us born in the land of the free
But when it comes to equality
It’s time to check reality
You’re still white and I’m still black
---
This country was built around your needs
Caters to your wishes and keeps your comforts
And all those laws written for justice for all
Seem to spare you most of all
While targeting us from 3 feet tall!
---
You can claim it’s coincidence and not by design
But isn’t it funny how the pattern fits you just right?
How everything is tailored to benefit you
You never have to wonder if you belong
Never will be told to go back where you belong
---
To this day the system hasn’t changed
To this day you still the only one privileged
You know it’s the truth but refute the facts
To admit that, would be to admit your advantage
And you’re not ready to give up all that
---
Don’t worry we understand your reticence
How will you be special if we are all truly equal?
But that space you’re occupying
We’re claiming our share at last
For like I said at the top
---
You and me are both Americans
Both of us born in the land of the free
And when it comes to equality
It’s time to check reality
You and me are both Americans
