Tsunami Warning in Southeast and South-central Alaska [1]

13:15 AK Time

We just got an emergency warning notice of a potential tsunami stemming from a 7.2 earthquake in the ocean 50 miles south of Sand Point, AK. Here’s the link to the information

www.tsunami.gov/.…

The map shows the Aleutian chain, the Alaska Peninsula, all of Kodiak Island, and both sides of Cook Inlet under warning. The quake was 22 miles deep which should cushion the shock some, but this is the peak fishing season and Cook Inlet, the upper portions of the Gulf of Alaska, and the banks where people stand to “dip net” salmon are presently crawling with people. The potential for a disaster is significant but it’s not quite a hair-on-fire situation.

If you happen to have any friends or family who are on the Kenai or the adjacent waters dip netting, call them and tell them to get to safe ground NOW. Most of you won’t of course, but for the handful who are around here, including visitors and tourists, be careful please.

--Curious therapist.

PS- we live above the likely top of any tsunami and three miles inland, so we’re most likely OK.
