The Real Scandal [1]

There is a sick irony surrounding the obsession with Donald Trump and the Epstein file scandal. For many years now, the Republicans have duped the public into believing they have a driving compassion for children and babies. For more than fifty years, they fought and finally won the battle against a woman’s right to choose how she and her spouse decide what is best for their family’s health. What the real fight for Republicans turned out to be is a theocratic argument, not backed by Biblical teaching, to protect a fetus and not a baby. An example of fetus over baby and children is the passing of the Big Beautiful Bill that cuts both healthcare and food subsidies for children, the same children who were once fetuses.

So, while the press and members of the GOP wallow around in the latest Trump controversy, the fallout from the Trump administration's policy of destruction of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) should be what garners the biggest headlines. In 1970, Dorothee Sölle coined the term Christo-fascism, defined as a version of Christianity used to justify white authoritarian rule and rigid governance. Nothing illustrates the anti-Christian hypocrisy of such thinking as the planned destruction of 500 metric tons of food meant to feed poor children in Africa and the Middle East. The food, valued at $800,000,000, is sufficient to feed approximately 1.5 million children for a week and is designated for destruction by burning because, without USAID, the food cannot be distributed.

As part of the elephant droppings left behind by Elon Musk, the same excuses that Republicans used to justify the possible starving of children in the U.S. were the same reason given for the July 1 shutdown of USAID—waste, fraud, and abuse. Even if one wants to buy into the W, F, and A excuse, the Christian thing to do would have been to distribute the food to starving children before shutting down the agency. Or are the lives of black and brown children less valuable in the eyes of a fascist? President Trump has been transparent about his dislike for people of color, favoring those of a lighter hue. After calling African and Latin nations and Haiti “shithole countries,” he wondered aloud about why the country cannot immigrate more Norwegians. Amid the raids on public parks, businesses, and schools to root out undocumented immigrants, the Trump administration has quietly fostered the migration of white South African farmers using bogus information about their safety. “Any Farmer (with family!) from South Africa, seeking to flee that country for reasons of safety, will be invited into the United States of America with a rapid pathway to Citizenship. This process will begin immediately!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account. Predictably, the president simultaneously ended consideration for black and brown people, saying, … refugees competed for 'resources' against Americans.

The GOP has bellowed and howled about the well-being of children, accusing Democrats of sponsoring pedophile rings. More and more, GOP concern has been revealed as a tactic to win votes with moral posturing and not a genuine concern for the welfare of children, be they American or from other nations. Five hundred tons of food burned; What about the children?
