Maurene Comey, Scapegoat - But Goats Can Kick Back [1]

Trump’s sudden firing of veteran prosecutor Maurene Comey has only added fuel to the fire threatening to consume the Sex Predator-in-Chief. But there is a so-far little noticed side to the story that could wreak even further damage. The New York Times gives a hint (buried way down) in its story today: Manhattan Prosecutor Who Handled Epstein Cases Is Fired.

But the firing raises the possibility that Ms. Comey is being set up as a scapegoat as the administration fights to move past the scandal.

Now why would Ms. Comey be seen as a scapegoat? Well, she was the lead prosecutor in the case against Ghislane Maxwell, Epstein’s girlfriend and procurer, and brought in a conviction of sex trafficking. Here is CNN: Maurene Comey, federal prosecutor in Epstein case, fired from US attorney’s office

Maurene Comey was a lead prosecutor on the investigation and prosecution of Epstein and his former girlfriend and accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell was convicted and is serving a 20-year sentence. She has appealed.

Note that last sentence: Maxwell’s conviction is currently under appeal.

The Times article links to a Politico story from last week,saying that Comey “had argued against the disclosure of investigative records,” but doesn’t say more than that.But it should have explained this, as Politico did:

Last year, U.S. District Judge Paul Gardephe, a George W. Bush appointee, upheld the FBI’s denial of access to the bulk of the records. The judge’s ruling rested largely on a formal declaration from a federal prosecutor deeply involved in the Epstein and Maxwell prosecutions: Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey. She argued that disclosure of the investigative records was likely to interfere with the appeal in Maxwell’s case. [emphasis added]

It is not known if the client list is part of those records. Comey was trying to preserve the conviction through the appeals process — but of course that means nothing to Trump. He may well have fired her so he can say to his base that, well, he was going to release the files, but Maurene Comey — daughter of James Comey, whom MAGA accuses of threatening Trump’s assassination — had tied his hands with the judge’s ruling. Aha! More Comey family shenanigans.

Much of MAGA has been calling for Maurene Comey’s firing all along. Laura Loomer takes victory lap over firing of ex-FBI chief Comey’s daughter after pressing ‘Pam Blondi’:

Loomer seemed thrilled about the move. “This comes 2 months after my pressure campaign on Pam Blondi to fire Comey’s daughter and Comey’s son-in-law from the DOJ,” Loomer boasted in a X post on Wednesday, referring to Attorney General Pam Bondi. . . . In May, Loomer urged Bondi to terminate Comey and her husband, Lucas Issacharoff, an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the civil rights division. “If Blondi [sic] was a serious person, she would FIRE them both for being a national security risk via their proximity to a criminal who just committed a felony by threatening to assassinate the President,” the far-right activist wrote in a lengthy X post.

Loony Loomer’s gloating aside, it’s more likely Trump had Comey fired so he can blame her for the client list catastrophe. But has he really thought this through? Comey, while still limited by legal ethics to what she can say about the case, is no longer under DOJ authority and can let some hints drop. From everything I’ve heard about her today, she is not one to knuckle under.

Once again Trump, having shot himself in the foot, has reloaded and shot again. No wonder he’s having trouble walking.
