The Cowlitz County Historical Museum in Kelso, Washington has a decorative wood panel illustrating Grainart which reveals the natural beauty of wood. This is a technique inspired by European craftsmen: during castle restoration, new timbers would be sandblasted to match the old timbers. Grainart was developed by the Long-Bell Lumber Company in 1927 and the company produced Grainart until 1931.

According to the Museum:

“The wood was chosen carefully for its grain. Douglas fir, which grows hard summer wood, and soft spring wood was prized for the texture it yielded after the softer wood was blasted way. It is also lightweight and resistant to warping.”

The Grainart in the Museum was originally used to decorate the Guest House on the Long-Bell mill site. When the house was torn down, the Grainart was assembled in a panel which was displayed in the main office building of International Paper, the company which had acquired Long-Bell. The Grainart panel was donated to the Museum in 1996.
