Surely this reveals something of significance. But what exactly?
Trump’s supporters have shown themselves able to swallow elephants-- but now they’re choking on a mouse.
The elephants — crimes and blunders of the greatest significance — include his seizure of power the Constitution denies him, his reckless and idiotic tariff war on the world, which inflicted economic damage at home and abroad, and his sledgehammer assault on the U.S. government.
While swallowing those, they’re now choking on a comparative mouse: the matter of the “Epstein files.”
Why is that the thing that has pitched the Trump world into a fury?
Why would the dishonest handling of the Epstein matter generate such outrage, when historians will surely regard a great many others of his lies, manipulations, and misdeeds as far more serious?
Is it that, in that world, pedophilia is regarded as a more heinous crime than treason?
Is the Epstein bait-and-switch the “straw that broke the camel’s back”? (But if so, why this straw, when every day Trump offers other straws?)
Or is it something more complicated: that this 'mouse' provides a more acceptable reason, within MAGA world, to turn on Trump — a way to express disillusionment without admitting the rest?
Or is it something more complicated — that this “mouse” provides a reason that’s more acceptable in MAGA world to turn on Trump, a way to express disillusionment without admitting the rest?
I don’t claim to know the answer. But from here, it looks like hanging a serial killer for—if not jaywalking—then something no more outrageous than petty theft.
