GNR for July 15 - Republicans Unraveling [1]
['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Good Day, Gnuville and Happy Tuesday.
Today, I’m going to put in a bit of news but mostly I am going to focus on mental and physical health that we all need to protect.
Let’s get right to it.
Trump's Rancid Agenda Of Sabotage, Plunder and Betrayal Has Given The Pro-Democracy Movement A Big Opportunity, Simon Rosenberg, Hopium Chronicles, July 14, 2025.
We start the week where we ended last week - Trump is struggling, unpopular and we need to be very loud, together, in challenging his rancid agenda of sabotage, plunder and betrayal. As I wrote last week we now have two big opportunities to explain the details and harms of the extremist agenda Trump has thrust upon this good country: 1) state and localities will now begin to hold hearings and debate what the cuts to clean energy, health care, FEMA; the tariffs; the ICE escalation and mass deportation means for them 2) all of these noxious things Trump has passed and ordered must also now be incorporated in a fiscal year 2026 budget, debated and passed this fall (and perhaps winter). It’s an enormous opportunity to revisit the harms as they are turned into real appropriations and a real annual budget. We can and should make these next six months into a vibrant national conversation about what Trumpism means for us - poorer, weaker, less healthy, less safe and less free - and every Democratic elected official and Dem/pro-democracy aligned group now as an opportunity to do their part in enabling this conversation. We must move beyond the horserace and vote counts to make their dystopian extremism manifest and concrete.
🤬 📈 😩 Republicans UnRaveling 😫 📉 😡
'Bad to downright terrible': Data guru sees Trump crashing on what was key issue, Travis Gettys, Raw Story, July 14, 2025.
The president won re-election promising mass deportations, but CNN's Harry Enten said the public has seemingly turned on his crackdown less than six months after returning to office. "Trump's net approval rating on immigration, [I've] got five numbers for you across the screen here," Enten said. "A lot of focus on Gallup at minus-27, that's horrible. Quinnipiac University minus-16, that's awful. Marist is bad at minus-nine. Ipsos is minus-eight. Fox at minus-seven – bad. "So going from your left side, bad, to just downright terrible on the right side of your screen. The American people have turned against President Donald Trump on what was his best issue, one in which he had a positive net approval rating for most of his term, and arguably, the issue that got him, of course, the GOP nomination all the way back in 2016, and one of the issues, of course, he used last year to quite a successful degree." x x YouTube Video
Will the Epstein Story Hurt Trump in MAGA-Land? Wake Up—It Already Has, Michael Tomasky, The New Republic, July 14, 2025.
Will this MAGA-world rift do real damage to Donald Trump? What do I mean “will”? It already has. Trump can lie all day long about the economy, the world, Medicaid cuts, immigrants, Democrats, Rosie O’Donnell; lies on these and other topics, his base eats up. They only deepen the bond. But seeming to link arms with the deep state in burying the Epstein story? That is evidence of a corruption that upends the very moral order of MAGA world.✂️ Some Republicans have split from Trump on certain policy questions—Putin and Russia, tariffs, Medicaid cuts. But policy questions are the bland, odorless vegetables of politics, especially in a party that shows far more contempt for policy than interest in it. On the other hand, scandals and pseudo-scandals and conspiracy theories—these are the red meat matters, the things that get people’s blood boiling. Trump, MAGA, and the whole right-wing ecosphere have never not been on the same page here—from Hillary and Russia to Wikileaks to the Biden Crime Family to 60 Minutes being in bed with Kamala. There’s never been an inch of daylight between them. Now there is. Will all of MAGA-land desert Trump? Of course not. Will they rally to his side the next time he really locks horns with the deep state? Sure. But there’s a leak in the dike now. MAGA elements are feeling a little bit of the mistrust that those of us in the real world have long harbored about Trump. What’s more, they’re learning that one can oppose the king, and it can feel okay. And remember—this story is a long, long way from over. x People often see Trump as the fount of the right's fixation on conspiracy theories. But he isn't; he was just very good at leveraging and exploiting that fixation. Epstein, though, is one he can't control.

🤷🏼♀️ When does a conservative lawmaker become moderate? After they disagree with Trump, Stephen Fowler, NPR, July 14, 2025.
What do you call a Republican lawmaker who's too conservative for folks on the left and not conservative enough for some on the right? Some people might say "a moderate." But these days, it's just as likely to be "retired." North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis announced he would not seek reelection after voting against the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," the sweeping legislation poised to slash social programs such as Medicaid to pay for tax cuts and increased immigration enforcement.✂️ The increasing demand of conservatism to be in total alignment with Trumpism is why occasional deviation from party loyalty can end up a liability, even in swing state elections, Cooper said. "You'd like to believe this fiction that purple states are states where if you have a little bit of moderation, you're rewarded," he said. "It's quite the opposite. You're actually penalized in some ways even more." Even in safer Republican seats, there are primary challengers looking to unseat Sen. John Cornyn in Texas and Sen. Bill Cassidy in Louisiana who say these objectively conservative senators aren't conservative enough. x All the brain geniuses posting about how the GOP isn't running for reelection need to account for things like this. Let's say for a minute I'm willing to ignore the fact that *elections are happening now*. If they're being cancelled in '26, why does it matter that incumbents run in vulnerable seats?

5 eating habits that can help you sleep better at night, Clare Marie Schneider, Marielle Segarra, Sam Yellowhorse Kesler, Malaka Gharib, NPR, May 19, 2025.
"What you eat, in terms of nutrients, fats, sugar and fiber, can all play a role in sleep quality at night," says Marie-Pierre St-Onge , a nutrition scientist and researcher at Columbia University and the co-author of the cookbook Eat Better, Sleep Better . We asked sleep researchers to share science-backed dietary practices that improve sleep. Here are their do's and don'ts. DO seek out foods rich in tryptophan ...You can find tryptophan in almonds, barley, brown rice, chia seeds, lentils, oats, pumpkin seeds, salmon, tofu, turkey, walnuts, white beans and yogurt. DO swap sugary and processed foods for fruits and vegetables ...Many fruits and veggies are "good sources for multiple sleep-supporting nutrients," St-Onge says. That includes serotonin, melatonin and micronutrients like magnesium, vitamin B6 and folate, which also help the body to produce melatonin. (Examples: bananas, cherries, pineapple, spinach, tomatoes) DO avoid caffeine in the late afternoon and evening … Sensitivity to caffeine varies, but the American Academy of Sleep Medicine says to avoid caffeine in the late afternoon and evening. Experiment with the timing that works best for you. For some people, cutting out caffeine by late morning is best. DON'T drink alcohol right before bed … While alcohol may initially sedate you, "the pendulum swings in the opposite direction and wakes you up" as it leaves your system, he says. It makes your sleep "shallow, choppy and broken up." If you're considering a nightcap in the evening, don't drink it right before bed. Have your little tipple a few hours earlier. You want to give the alcohol more "time to exit your system," says Grandner. DON'T feast on heavy meals right before bed … Stop eating a couple of hours before bed, says Abbasi-Feinberg. "If your digestion is done, you tend to sleep better."

WHY DON’T CHICAGOANS PUT KETCHUP ON THEIR HOT DOGS?, Geoffrey Baer, Chicago Mysteries, WTTW.
The reason Chicagoans shun ketchup is because of all the other ingredients on the beloved Chicago-style hot dog.✂️ Mmmmm! YUM!! 😋 “There are seven important ingredients, and they really tell the story of twentieth-century immigration to Chicago,” Eng said. So let’s break those ingredients down. The poppy seed bun reflects Eastern Europe, while the dog itself, often sold by Jewish Americans and sometimes kosher, is Austrian or German. The mustard is also German, while the vibrant sweet piccalilli is a British contribution. Greeks and Italians gave us the elements that “dragged [the hot dog] through the garden” – onions, tomatoes, and a pickle spear. To top it all off, there’s the sport pepper. “There are two schools of thought on these. One [is] that they came with Mexican Americans during the Columbian Exposition. Another theory is that they came during the Great Migration with African Americans who came from Louisiana and Mississippi.” Finally, the celery salt is a Chicago contribution, since the city was key to celery production at the turn of the century. So why no ketchup? Because all those carefully fine-tuned ingredients are like a “beautiful orchestra,” and, said Eng, “The ketchup would smash it, boom, come in with a big bassoon and ruin everything.” But why would ketchup ruin the harmony? It’s loaded with sugar, which is why we liked it so much as kids.
Here’s how to make a genuine, absolutely delicious Chicago style hot dog (Nifty style):
Ingredients:
All-beef bun-sized wieners (I strongly recommend Nathan’s kosher all beef or Vienna all-beef if you can find them)
poppy seed hot dog buns (if poppy seeds are not for you, you can use a hoagie bun or other substantial hot dog bun — it won’t be true blue Chi-style, but that’s ok! 😁)
mustard (you can use any kind, I guess, but the classic is good old yellow mustard)
green relish (in Chicago we enjoy the bright green “Chicago style” piccalilli relish, but any green sweet relish/piccalilli you like will do)
diced white onions
fresh tomatoes, sliced and slices halved
*sport peppers (you can chop or leave whole — classic is leave whole, but nifty usually chops)
dill pickle spears
celery salt
* If peppers are too spicy for you, it’s OK to leave them off. In fact, it’s OK to leave off anything you don’t like! No judgement here! 😁
Cooking Method(s):
Chicago-style hot dogs are traditionally cooked by boiling or steaming, with steamed buns. Please do that for the true blue iconic Chicago style hot dog.
Heat water to boiling and then pop in the hot dogs just until heated right through. Don’t cook to the point of splitting, you want to keep that snap). Steam the buns over the boiling water at the same time or right after just until hot and soft, not soggy.
✶ However, this is where Nifty commits sacrilege (at least in summer) because I grill the wieners and even toast the buns (very lightly). I enjoy hot dogs both boiled/steamed AND grilled, but in summer, grilling is a must because I’m not having a steamer going in my kitchen in the 90+ heat of a Chicago summer. There is a noticeable difference in taste and texture between steamed and grilled hot dogs, and I love them both in different ways. YMMV.
So, for Nifty’s Chicago summer-style hot dogs, fire up your grill and when medium/ hot, put on the dogs, turning to cook evenly. Make sure they’re hot through, but do not overcook! You do not want char — although light grill lines are OK.
Remove the wieners and lightly toast the buns (be careful to only lightly toast the inside, and don’t let it get too dry — you need the soft center under the light toasting, to pillow all the ingredients). It’s Ok not to toast the buns if you prefer. I just like the smell of grilled toast.
Assembly:
Spread a bun with mustard and relish. Put the wiener in the bun and top with a little more mustard and relish, onions, peppers and sprinkle with celery salt.
Tuck 3 half slices of tomato on one side of the wiener and on the other side tuck in a dill pickle spear. You can shake on another dash of celery salt if you like, for good measure. 😋
Grab some serviettes and a beer or soda and enjoy the best hot dog you have ever eaten in your life!
🥧 And pie for dessert!
The pie I wait all year for, Bibi Hutchings, Salon, July 14, 2025.
This luxurious pie is best made with peaches that nearly fall apart on the first bite — the kind with a heady fragrance and so much juice it’s impossible not to dribble nectar down your shirt. It showcases the kind of perfection that can only come from fruit left to linger in the warmth of sunny afternoons until they’re just shy of dropping from the tree on their own. Fresh Peach Meringue Pie Yields: 8 servings
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes Ingredients Regular pie crust of choice, pre-baked to golden brown and cooled. 6-8 fresh ripe peaches Fresh lemon or lime 1-2 Tbsp brown sugar 2 egg whites, room temperature Pinch of cream of tartar, about 1/8 tsp Salt, less than 1/8 tsp 2-3 Tbsp superfine sugar Directions Peel peaches (see Cook’s Notes) and slice thin. Place into a bowl.
Taste peaches for sweetness and add 1-2 Tbsp sugar and a light squeeze of fresh lemon. Stir gently to combine and set aside for 20-30 minutes.
Place egg whites in mixing bowl and sprinkle with a pinch of cream of tartar, and whip until stiff. Add powdered sugar (up to 4 Tbsp) a little at a time, beating continuously. (See Cook’s Notes)
Beat to stiff peaks. Meringue should shine.
Fill prepared pie shell with sliced peaches—do not add much of the juice—and spread the meringue in swirls over the top, all the way to the edge so that the meringue touches the crust.
Bake on the lower middle rack about 20 minutes or until meringue is delicately browned. Check on it often.
🏞️ Get Outdoors Every Day 🏞️
This next story describes a doctor’’s approach to wellness that is interesting and encouraging. It is by no means a complete approach — we cannot eliminate all health issues by healthy living, no matter what RFKjr may claim — but spending more time outdoors and getting more exercise, if possible, will improve the quality of most peoples’ lives, which is a worthy goal in and of itself. I think it is hugely important especially for mental health.
With social prescribing, hanging out, movement and arts are doctor's order, Rhitu Chatterjee, NPR, July 14, 2025.
"I worked away from home six days a week, working up to 12-15 hours a day," says Frost, now 76. "My only exercise was looking for a fast food outlet in the evening when I'd parked up." He gained weight and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in his 50s. His doctors put him on insulin injections and told him to lose weight and move more. "When l, like most people, failed, they made me feel weak and worthless," says Frost. Then, Frost met a doctor with a completely different approach — one that changed his life. "He asked me what mattered to me, which I'd never been asked before by a doctor," says Frost. "I told him that I wanted to live long enough to see my grandkids grow up." The doctor also asked Frost about things he enjoyed doing as a kid and discovered he used to love riding a bike. He gave him a prescription for a 10-week cycling course called Pedal Ready for adults getting back into cycling.✂️ It's the idea of health professionals "literally prescribing you a community activity or resource the same way they'd prescribe you pills or therapies," she explains. The prescriptions include exercise, art, music, exposure to nature and volunteering, which are known to have enormous benefits to physical and mental health. And it all starts with "flipping the script from what's the matter with you to focusing on what matters to you," Hotz says. "What are your activities that you love? What gets you out of bed in the morning?"

Hello Everybody! It’s me, Curlygirly! I hope you are all doing well.

Today, there is haze in the sky that might be from fires up in Canada. What a world!
That’s my personal update, and now the news!
First up: We have names for our piping plover chicks!!
🐣 Names for our piping plover chicks!
Chicagoans have voted, and the newest piping plover chicks have new names, Mary Norkol, Chicago Sun✶Times, July 13, 2025.
The three new piping plover chicks born at Montrose Beach have been named in true Chicago fashion: Bean, El and Ferris. Bean is named after the Cloud Gate sculpture, colloquially called “The Bean,” in Millennium Park. Bean, who was previously called Green Star, hatched later than their siblings and has now grown into a more adventurous bird, according to a social media post from an account giving bird lovers updates on the plovers. Ferris, formerly known as Blue Star, is named because Chicago is home to the first Ferris Wheel, which was exhibited during the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. It’s also a nod to the Chicago-based cult classic film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” the plover group announced. The name is a good fit for the bird, who has begun to explore the beach far and wide, the group said. El is named after Chicago’s elevated train system. The same way the train connects Chicago, so do the plovers, the post says. As bird enthusiasts have traveled to Montrose Beach to see the plovers, many of them have relied on the El. x Hiya! I'm El. The El (for Elevated) is Chicago's transit system. Just like our Piping Plover family at Montrose, the El connects the city of Chicago, its surrounding suburbs, and the community it serves. 1/2

🐋 Beluga whale gets an important surgery in Chicago!
Shedd Aquarium Makes History With Successful Surgery on Beluga Whale: ‘We Were All Holding Our Breath’, Patti Wetli, WTTW (PBS), July 3, 2025.
Officials at Shedd Aquarium say they are guardedly optimistic about the outcome of a groundbreaking surgery on 12-year-old Kimalu, one of their eight beluga whales. A team of nearly 30 experts from Shedd and around the country on Tuesday took part in the procedure to remove a network of cysts growing close to Kimalu’s blowhole and on her neck. “In the process, Kimalu became the first known beluga in the world to recover from general anesthesia,” Shedd said in a statement. Kimalu was born at the Shedd and it was her caretakers’ daily familiarity with the beluga that led them to notice a change in her behavior. A physical checkup, followed by a CT scan, revealed the cysts, which were causing discomfort and becoming larger. Though inaction wasn’t an option, Kimalu’s caretakers realized surgery posed inherent risks. While sedation of any animal is tricky, anesthetizing a 1,000-pound aquatic creature adds several degrees of difficulty. There had only been one prior documented case of a beluga undergoing anesthesia, according to Shedd. “Because this case is so unprecedented, we could do everything right and still be unsuccessful,” Dr. Karisa Tang, who oversees the veterinary medical program at Shedd Aquarium, said in a statement. Kimalu isn’t out of the woods yet, but the fact that she survived the surgery and was roused from anesthesia represents a huge step forward in beluga care.
🎶 Time for a Music Break to Celebrate Kimalu! 🎶

🐦 Another Chicago bird story
We like lots of different birds in Chicago — even the ones who are sometimes called pests! Me and Mama don’t think of pigeons as pests. We like them! I like their red feet and Mama likes all their different colors and the way they gather together in large flocks just coo-coodleing and snoozing right out in public.
Anyway, some wag once said that a big mystery in life is why don’t we ever see baby pigeons and I admit they had me — until I read this story!
Is that a baby dragon? This pigeon rescue is caring for Chicago's most polarizing flock, Grace Logan, Chicago Sun✶Times, July 14, 2025.
Me and Mama saw this flock early one Sunday morning on a church steps. I think they were waiting for Mass to begin.
I like pigeons and I don’t (usually) chase them. 😇 The baby bird arrived at the Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue late last month after he fell too early from his nest and a passerby found him wandering the streets of downtown Chicago, said Natalie Quist, part of the rescue’s board of directors. The “nestling pigeon” — known as a squab — was about 2 weeks old when he was taken in by the group. He quickly gained fans among staff and supporters of the group because of his resemblance to a tiny winged dragon.✂️ Because pigeons like Baby Dragon are feral and qualify as a “non-native” species, Quist said, many wildlife agencies with limited funds can’t administer care to them. That’s where she and volunteers like her at the pigeon rescue organization step in. They run the only pigeon-centered rehabilitation facility active in the city. “You don’t see baby pigeons because they don’t leave the nest until they’re totally independent,” Quist told the Sun-Times. “That’s important to know, because if you do see a baby pigeon that means they need help.” ✂️ “I find that when we get a call and I’m going to go find a bird, it’s such a quiet little reminder that there’s still such good people out there, " Heckathorne said. “So many of these people aren’t invested in pigeon rescue, but something about seeing that bird… they took the time to figure out who to call.”
🐕🦺🦮 Finally, a beautiful reflection about what matters in life

🎩 GOODNEWSROUNDUP:
There are many ways to get involved. Everyone can find something that works for them.
Here are some ideas.
🎩 CHLORIS CREATOR:
I know it’s tough to see the path forward. And I can’t guarantee that there is a path forward. But people who are smarter and braver than I have seen ways to move ahead.
Their (the fascists’) plans really are dark, but many of them are also dumb, in the sense that they don’t make sense. So many of them cannot succeed. Here are some quick hits. Stay involved. Yeah, that’s tough. I want to look away too, but by taking simple actions you can make a difference. Keep contacting your representatives, both in DC and at home.
Support causes that will fight. Send money if you can. Also, spread their news with clicks and conversation.
Slow them down. Oppose and block at every turn.
Make tRump unpopular. Doing this weakens him. And it should not be that difficult. The GOP made a lot out of Biden is old and eggs cost too much. Well, tRump is older than Biden was at the beginning of his term and tRump has no policies that are going to bring down inflation. And a host of other problems, like he’s a convicted felon.
Divide the GOP from each other. They are a coalition based on contradictory promises, so there’s plenty to work with.
Keep telling the truth and showing love.
Make sure to pace yourselves in this marathon and to practice self-care.
