YOU CAN REPOST IT AS COMMENT in the DIARY

WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING in the DIARY that you LIKE

THE PERSON who MAKES the FIRST COMMENT WILL GET TWO CRITTERS

(Or NOT As the CASE MAY BE)

YOU WILL FIND in the DIARIES a LOT of POLITICS

I agree with kraigo: news these days is everything everywhere all at once. So if I missed something big, please put it in the comments.

The great thing about the Epstein issue is that it has MAGA riled. They loved Trump because he hated pedophiles.Now what are they to think? It’s the Trump team’s fault. Before the election Trump and Don Jr and even JD Vance made it clear what they thought of Epstein’s habits.

That was then, this is now: he only wishes we didn’t talk about it.

Not to rehash, but we’ve seen a good bit of the Epstein files (that supposedly don’t exist) already, and we all know what’s there.

x Lieu: I also note the Epstein files that have already been released show that Trump is all over the files. He’s in multiple pictures with Epstein. There’s multiple videos of Trump with Epstein. There are plane logs of Trump on Epstein’s plane.

Democrats tried to press a release of those files. Republicans have thwarted the attempt.

x Every single Republican member of Congress has turned their back on the values they campaigned on: voting to block the release of the Epstein files.

“Stop talking about Epstein!” he says. “Pedophilia isn’t that big a deal!”

No, wait, that was The Onion that said that, not Trump. They shouldn’t give him ideas though.

In ICE news, it appears that ICE can retain anonymity even in the courtroom.

The IRS is sharing data with ICE. There’s no better reminder than that about how illegal immigrants pay taxes, and how legal immigrants are likewise at risk.

A number of people have asked, “How come it’s only brown skinned people that ICE targets? They never go after anyone white!” That’s largely but not totally true. Yet another tourist has been nabbed.

Thomas, a 35-year-old tech worker and father of three from Ireland, came to West Virginia to visit his girlfriend last fall. It was one of many trips he had taken to the US, and he was authorized to travel under a visa waiver program that allows tourists to stay in the country for 90 days. He had planned to return to Ireland in December, but was briefly unable to fly due to a health issue, his medical records show. He was only three days overdue to leave the US when an encounter with police landed him in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) custody. From there, what should have been a minor incident became a nightmarish ordeal: he was detained by Ice in three different facilities, ultimately spending roughly 100 days behind bars with little understanding of why he was being held – or when he’d get out. (The Guardian)

So far there’s not much said about the cost to taxpayers. Moving ICE prisoners from facility to facility so that their lawyers can’t find them is expensive. Shipping them overseas and housing them there is worse. Trump proposes that every state should build ICE prisons like Alligator Alcatraz. This suggests that swift deportation out of the country isn’t the point. But it costs money to house and guard people. Egregious violation of human rights doesn’t come cheap. Where’s the concern about fraud and waste with ICE?

Cuts to federal departments continue. Employees left the State Department last week while a crowd cheered their contributions. People fired from Department of Health and Human Services and then reinstated temporarily by the court have been let go again. Department of Education was hit this week.

x Last night, the Department of Health and Human Services sent termination letters to employees who were originally fired in April but temporarily reinstated due to a lower court ruling. The Supreme Court cleared the way last week for those firings to proceed. — Alt National Park Service (@altnps.bsky.social) 2025-07-15T13:11:59.400Z

x let's take stock here: (Democratic) Presidents, via the Dept of Education, can't cancel student debt because statutes don't clearly authorize it. Republican Presidents can cancel/shut down the Dept of Education because, even though only Congress can shut down departments ..., ... 🤷‍♀️ YOLO?

DOGE is busy overseeing the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

x A DOGE staffer has assumed control over the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), an agency traditionally independent from direct White House authority. Adam Blake, now serving as the DOGE-appointed lead at the NRC, has been tasked with carrying out directives from Trump. — Alt National Park Service (@altnps.bsky.social) July 14, 2025 at 5:38 AM

===

But in a bit of good news about DOGE, they have to be transparent about their operation, at least right now.

x Waiting to see what happens at SCOTUS if the admin tries to appeal, but Americans deserve information about how their confidential information is being (mis)handled.

High time! At Jamie Raskin’s request I filed a FOIA request on DOGE and I am wa-a-a-aiting.

===

DOGE’s idea of saving money is very expensive.

===

Whew! Intermission.

x NASA has reversed course and will not host the National Climate Assessments on its website, despite initially saying it would preserve access after the Trump administration removed them from the official climate science portal. — Alt National Park Service (@altnps.bsky.social) July 15, 2025 at 12:36 PM

Weakening the nation’s defenses while alienating allies:

x Our investigation revealed how a little-known Microsoft program could leave some of the U.S. government’s most sensitive data vulnerable to hacking from its leading cyber adversary. TL;DR, these are the 9 biggest takeaways ⤵️

Covid cases are rising again, though you don’t hear much about it. You probably knew about the CDC’s wastewater tracking of Covid and other viruses. Huffpost says the Wastewater Scan site may be even more accurate.

Today is the birthday of Linda Ronstadt and also of Clement Moore, who wrote The Night Before Christmas. On this day in 1870, Georgia was the last state to be readmitted to the Union. On this day in 1960 Chubby Checker released The Twist. And on this day in 2006, Twitter debuted.

It’s National Gummi Worm Day, probably because gummi worms need a holiday too.

It’s National Tapioca Pudding Day!
