Happy Bastille Day and welcome to the new week! It feels like forever since we’ve had a diary… but our diarists ARE allowed to go on vacation or have outside lives, and we don’t have a regular Saturday diarist. So you’ll be getting lots of Top Mojo after the fold! But first…

In a recent chat, one participant mentioned they were watching the most recent television adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. I read the books quite some time ago and enjoyed the television adaptation, even though it was (as is so often the case) not completely faithful to the books. Don’t worry if you haven’t read/seen it though, this diary is NOT about diving into the complexities of the multiverse Pullman created. It’s about one particular aspect…

One of the features of humans in the world where most of the action takes place is that everyone has a daemon, in essence a physical manifestation of a person’s soul/inner essence. Daemons are usually but not exclusively opposite-gendered (and I do not remember any nonbinary or transgender characters in the books) from their person, and while they are fluid in form during childhood they settle on a final form during adolescence. The main character Lyra’s daemon Pantalaimon eventually takes the final form of a pine marten.

There’s so much more fascinating about this concept, but for us tonight, one other thing to know is that a daemon’s final form reflects in some way the personality of their person. So one of our Big Bad characters has a golden monkey daemon with a terribly cruel personality, for example.

The chat I was involved in had us wondering what our daemons would be if they manifested in physical form as in Lyra’s world (in other worlds humans have daemons but they do not manifest physically, but are invisible). I decided my daemon would possibly be a wolf… smart, social- forming emotional attachments with others and thus very family/pack-oriented, communicative, playful.

How about you? If you had a daemon, what might it be? come share with us in the comments, after tonight’s Tops!
