Hall of World War II: German submarines (photo diary) [1]

The Hall of World War II in the Tillamook Air Museum in Tillamook, Oregon is a huge exhibit showing World War II in models. During World War II German U-boats (from the German U-Boot, short for Unterseeboot (under-sea-boat)) disrupted merchant traffic destined for the United Kingdom. Initially, the U-boat strategy was successful, but by May 1943—known as Black May—the U-boat losses outpaced their effect on shipping.
During World War II, German U-boats sank nearly 3,000 ships. On the other hand, 863 U-boats were used in combat and of these 785 were lost. Of the U-boats lost, 222 were scuttled by their crews and 174 surrendered.
