White to move and mate in two #691 — Skepticism, severely lacking of late [1]

In the 90s and 00s, I was a diligent follower of James Randi, who was famous for debunking fantastical claims by the likes of spoon-bending charlatan Uri Geller, and practitioners of dowsing (finding underground water with sticks), homeopathy, and a slew of other forms of alternative medicine. Randi was a former stage magician who went by the moniker The Amazing Randi. He designed controlled experiments (with a million dollar prize held in escrow) the pseudo-science brigade could never manage to overcome. It always seemed to be an 'off' day for them when subjected to a rigorous test they couldn't cheat at.
Don't see a whole lot of skepticism nowadays when it comes to believing that anything Donnie Dictator-Pants and his motley collection of upwardly failing sycophants proposes that is supposedly good for the occupants or the economy of the USA... actually is. Our (generally) willfully ignorant, low information electorate proves what a recipe for disaster this has become. Will our democracy survive long enough to turn the corner, or will Biden's term be the last one you could call democratic?
