Texas Flood and the Birds [1]

The first time I was a fool,

I never knew that love could be so cruel.

It happened to me again,

third time lucky.

Foghat — Third Time Lucky

I did better than that, I only needed a second chance to get it right.

As a consequence of luck, good timing, and effort Becky and I have now lived together a quarter century on a part of the Guadalupe river just downstream from New Braunfels. It’s called Lake Dunlap, a euphemism for a flat stretch of water almost 9 miles long and an average of about 100 yards wide.

The microenvironment (that may not be an actual word, my spellcheck doesn’t think it is) of where I live saw some dramatic changes last week, but, thankfully not the devastation that happened up river around Kerrville. There is an amazing amount of wildlife that manages to find a place to live among the numerous waterfront residences in my neighborhood. One morning I decided to pay attention and counted over 30 species of birds from my hammock in about as many minutes.

So things here are pretty much back to normal. But the ducks and geese have disappeared. Where to? The tree nesters (herons, egrets, etc.) seem mostly undisturbed, but the ones who spend their nights on the ground are not to be found. All the debris is either trapped on the banks or floated downstream, so we’re back to duck-normal.

Except for the ducks.

I think the circumstances couldn’t have coincided worse to drive them off. I live outside the city limits, so a night filled with fireworks followed by how nasty the water turned did a pretty harsh number on their lives.

I hope they’re safe and not traumatized wherever they went. I really hope they come back.

I just did this post because the real media have bigger fish to fry at this time. But I thought some of you might be interested.
