Europe's freedom faces greatest 'threat' since WW2, says Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron has outlined plans for a big increase in defence spending, warning Europe's liberty is facing a "greater threat" than at any time since the end of World War Two. In a speech to the armed forces in Paris, he said "we are living in a pivotal moment" due to complex geopolitics. Macron called for France's defence spending to rise by €3.5bn (£3bn) next year and then by a further €3bn in 2027. Referencing the threat from Russia, he denounced "imperialist policies" and "annexing powers". Macron pledged to double France's military budget by 2027, three years earlier than originally planned. In 2017, his country's defence budget stood at €32bn and under the plans would rise to €64bn in two years time. The proposals still need to be approved by the French government. "To be free in this world, you must be feared. To be feared, you must be powerful," he said in the speech, which fell on the eve of Bastille Day.

Wildfire destroys historic Grand Canyon Lodge on North Rim
Grand Canyon National Park officials confirm the historic lodge on the North Rim was destroyed in the extreme expansion of the Dragon Bravo Fire overnight. Superintendent Ed Keable informed park residents, staff and others of the news in a meeting Sunday. He said the visitor center, the gas station, a wastewater treatment plant, an administrative building and some employee housing were among the up to 80 structures lost. The fire is now up to 5,000 acres with no containment. The Southwest Complex Incident Management Team 4 will take command tomorrow morning. Park officials say the Dragon Bravo Fire exhibited "extreme and volatile" fire behavior amid winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour Saturday night, resulting in a 500-acre expansion. Fire crews worked overnight to slow the fire’s progression under dangerous and fast-changing conditions. However, they couldn't use aerial retardant due to the chlorine gas leak at the water treatment facility.

The National Weather Service has extended a flood watch for San Antonio, Austin, and the Hill Country. Additional rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches are forecast, with isolated totals of 3 inches in some areas. The flood watch advisory is issued when conditions are favorable for possible flooding. The National Weather Service says those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop. The recovery operation for those missing in the July 4th floods in Kerr County was halted Sunday due to weather conditions and is expected to continue after the flood watch expires on Monday.

At least 30 killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza as war deaths top 58,000, officials say
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip — Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip killed at least 30 people on Sunday, including six children at a water collection point, local health officials said, despite attempts by mediators to bring about a ceasefire. Israel and Hamas appeared no closer to a breakthrough in talks meant to pause the 21-month war and free some Israeli hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in Washington last week to discuss the deal with the Trump administration, but a new sticking point has emerged over the deployment of Israeli troops during the truce, raising questions over the feasibility of a new deal. Israel says it will only end the war once Hamas surrenders, disarms and goes into exile, something it refuses to do. Hamas says it is willing to free all the remaining 50 hostages, less than half said to be alive, in exchange for an end to the war and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces.

Trump’s latest tariffs ‘are real’ unless deals improve, economic adviser says
Donald Trump has seen some trade deal offers and thinks they need to be better, Kevin Hassett, the White House economic adviser, said on Sunday, adding that the president will proceed with threatened tariffs on Mexico, the European Union and other countries if they don’t improve. “Well, these tariffs are real if the president doesn’t get a deal that he thinks is good enough,” Hassett told ABC’s This Week program. “But you know, conversations are ongoing, and we’ll see where the dust settles.“ Hassett told ABC’s This Week program that Trump’s threatened 50% tariff on goods from Brazil reflect Trump’s frustration with the South American country’s actions as well as its trade negotiations with the US. On Thursday, Brazil threatened to retaliate against Trump’s plan with its own 50% tariff on US goods. “If he charges us 50%, we’ll charge him 50%,” Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian president, told local news outlet Record, a day after Trump threatened to impose steep duties on Brazilian goods.

Scientists detect biggest ever merger of two massive black holes
Scientists have detected ripples in space-time from the violent collision of two massive black holes that spiralled into one another far beyond the distant edge of the Milky Way. The black holes, each more than 100 times the mass of the sun, began circling each other long ago and finally slammed together to form an even more massive black hole about 10bn light years from Earth. The event is the most massive black hole merger ever recorded by gravitational wave detectors and has forced physicists to rethink their models of how the enormous objects form. The signal was recorded when it hit detectors on Earth sensitive enough to detect shudders in space-time thousands of times smaller than the width of a proton. “These are the most violent events we can observe in the universe, but when the signals reach Earth, they are the weakest phenomena we can measure,” said Prof Mark Hannam, the head of the Gravity Exploration Institute at Cardiff University. “By the time these ripples wash up on Earth they are tiny.

Trump says US will send Patriot missiles to Ukraine
United States President Donald Trump has said he will send Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine as his administration signals growing disillusionment with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to negotiate an end to Moscow’s invasion. “We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need,” Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sunday. “Putin really surprised a lot of people. He talks nice and then he bombs everybody in the evening,” Trump said. “So, there’s a little bit of a problem there. I don’t like it.” Trump said he had not decided on the number of Patriot batteries he would send to Ukraine, but “they’re going to have some because they do need protection”. Trump’s comments come after he last week confirmed that his administration had decided to sell weapons to NATO allies in Europe for them to pass on to Kyiv.

Gisele Pelicot awarded France's highest civilian honor
Gisele Pelicot, the French woman whose courage in publicly testifying about the decade-long sexual abuse she endured made her a symbol of women's rights in France, has received the country's highest civilian honor. Pelicot was named a knight of the Legion of Honor in a list published Sunday, ahead of France's Bastille Day celebrations. Pelicot gained international recognition after she testified against her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, who had drugged and raped her and invited strangers to assault her for more than a decade. Dominique Pelicot was convicted last year of aggravated rape and sentenced to 20 years in prison. In a landmark ruling, a court in Avignon sentenced his 50 co-defendants to prison terms ranging from three to 15 years.

USDA rundown: Record US corn exports and US biofuel boom
NAPERVILLE, Illinois, July 13 (Reuters) - The United States, the world’s top corn supplier, is set to export a record volume of corn in the waning 2024-25 marketing year, slightly edging out 2020-21’s high. The catch? This year’s efforts included virtually zero involvement from China, whereas 31% of U.S. exports went to China in 2020-21, which was easily a record share. China had struck up a trade relationship with No. 2 corn exporter Brazil a couple of years ago. But those purchases have dried up, too, reflecting China’s sharp drop-off as a global grain importer. China’s absence has not stopped U.S. corn exporters from a blockbuster season in 2024-25, which ends on August 31. USDA on Friday increased its 2024-25 U.S. corn export estimate to 2.75 billion bushels, up from 2.65 billion last month.
