Odds & Ends: News/Humor (with a "Who Lost the Week?" poll) [1]

I post a weekly diary of historical notes, arts & science items, foreign news (often receiving little notice in the US) and whimsical pieces from the outside world that I often feature in "Cheers & Jeers".

OK, you've been warned - here is this week's tomfoolery material that I posted.

CHEERS to Bill and Michael in PWM and ...... well, each of you at Cheers and Jeers. Have a fabulous weekend .... and week ahead.

ART NOTES — an exhibition entitled The Long View: From Conservation to Sustainability — with photos, paintings, prints, and sculptures by artists advocating for conservation and creation of sustainable habits (spanning the mid-nineteenth century to the present) — is at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in Little Rock to August 31st.

John James Audubon, circa 1845

YOUR WEEKEND READ #1 — if you’re looking for a detailed (yet concise) timeline of the MAGA outrage over the ‘non-existent’ Epstein Files — attorney Jay Kuo has a good summary, concluding with “Ghislaine Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence— apparently for trafficking nobody … to anyone”.

THURSDAY's CHILDREN are involved in a heated election near Boston - even involving a stolen campaign sign! - for the (imaginary) office of Bike Path Mayor on the Somerville Community Path. Other candidates: Freya is running as a member of the Com-meow-nist Party, Orange Cat is running with the Catalyst Party and Clawdius is representing the Indoor Cat Party.

Voting closes September 5th

YOUR WEEKEND READ #2 is this essay in The American Prospect by Harold Meyerson, noting that if Krasnov doesn’t chicken-out on his threats to make Brazil release Jair Bolsonaro … the US supply of coffee may take a big hit in price.

FRIDAY's CHILD is named Biscuit the Hero Cat - an Arkansas kitteh who (last year) came to the rescue of her family's chicken, scaring-off a neighbor's dog who was attacking her, which the family saw later on their CCTV video.

Biscuit the Hero Cat

BRAIN TEASER — try this Quiz of the Week's News from the BBC ...… and the usually easier, less UK-centered New York Times quiz (one common question between them).

YOUR WEEKEND READ #3 is this essay by former FBI special agent (and current MSNBC analyst) Frank Figliuzzi, observing Dan Bongino’s nearly teary-eyed appearance yesterday on Fox & Friends, about the hours he has to work at FBI headquarters … quite a difference from being a podcaster.

THE OTHER NIGHT yours truly hosted the Top Comments diary with a look at Skeets Alive! — some of my favorite recent Blue Sky posts.

x Tammy Bruce: "President Trump has not just the desire to ask for new ideas, he asks for them because he gets them. He knows new ideas are possible. His life is a new idea. The nature of what he's accomplished politically is a new idea." — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 2025-07-08T19:01:42.722Z

x Sorry, Tammy ..... Gary Hart cornered the market on "new ideas" years ago. There's a Cult of Donald-ality. — Ed Tracey (@ed-tracey.bsky.social) 2025-07-08T19:05:33.627Z

FATHER-DAUGHTER? — Duane Chapman (b. 1953) and MTG (b. 1974)

..... and finally, for a song of the week ...........................… no time for even a mini-profile. So I’ll highlight one song from Bonnie Raitt’s 1989 album Nick of Time — a triumph after she had been left-for-dead by much of the recording industry, only to see her achieve Album of the Year status at the Grammys, the first of her thirteen Grammy awards.
