MAGA Death Threats Over Editorial Cartoon — The Week in Editorial Cartoons (Update #6) [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-07-13

“Editorial Cartoonists are Democracy’s Canaries in a Coalmine”

Editorial Cartoonist Ann Telnaes, who resigned from the Washington Post when her editors refused to publish this cartoon in January 2025, critical of owner Jeff Bezos bending the knee before Trump, explains the essential need to celebrate free speech and tolerate dissent in a democracy.

A country without cartoonists mocking and criticizing the ruling elites is not only unthinkable, but undesirable, particularly so for a country founded on the notion of dissent against unfair monarchical decrees and practices.

In some respects, “It's déjà vu all over again” — as I wrote in this February 2021 diary.

Attribution: Jack Ohman, @jackohman.bsky.social For over a year, a disastrous, incompetent, and criminally negligent administration chose to play partisan politics, favoring unscientific remedies and solutions unfit for a country founded on the principles of the Enlightenment. The daily death toll kept rising, justified by a plethora of excuses offered that were unfit for this or any other democratic country. For four long years, conspiracy theories — not scientific data — ruled the day with total loyalty demanded of civil service employees whose job it is to provide non-partisan solutions. Finally, violence, not the rule of law, was the path chosen by a group of losers on their way out. Are any of them going to pay a price for this outrageous, unconstitutional, illegal, and criminal behavior? Most Americans know a different truth in their gut: we are a better people and country than what was on display early last month in Washington, DC. I live here in DC and the insurrection shook many people who have seen about everything in this town.

This country is secure enough, open enough, and tolerant enough to absorb dissent, regardless of which political party is in power. Period.

Either You Support Free Speech, Or You Don’t

MAGA Objected to This Editorial Cartoon

Buffalo Museum Cancels Event After Backlash Against Texas Flood Cartoon x The below political cartoon drawn by Pulitzer Prize-winner Adam Zyglis prompted death threats against him and resulted in the postponement of an event in support of local reporting in Buffalo, New York.

[image or embed] — SFDB (@sfdb.bsky.social) July 13, 2025 at 8:22 AM An event that spotlighted the work of a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist at the Buffalo History Museum was postponed this week following mounting public backlash, including alleged death threats, over a recent illustration commenting on the Texas flood. The Buffalo Newspaper Guild announced yesterday, July 10, that it was postponing the free happy hour event “Drawing Support for Local Journalism” at the museum due to “serious concerns about public safety” and a slew of death threats directed at cartoonist Adam Zyglis over an illustration published in The Buffalo News about the July 4 flood in central Texas. Titled “Swept Away,” Zyglis’s cartoon depicts a man in a red MAGA hat nearly fully submerged in flood waters while holding a sign above his head reading “HELP.” Not far behind him, a speech bubble belonging to a seemingly submerged person cites the Republican refrain, “Gov’t is the problem, not the solution.”

Inexcusable

x Threats of violence are never an appropriate or proportional response to a cartoon, regardless of whose sensibilities it offends. We stand with @adamzyglis.bsky.social

The Trump Threat

Let Him Testify, Then Trump Can Defend Himself

x It's a shame that Republicans, wanting to protect their pedophile president, will not open up an investigation into Trump, Pam Bondi, Kash Patel and Dan Bongino's refusal to release the Epstein files. I'd love to hear Michael Wolff testify under oath. 😳👇 pic.twitter.com/0m0KTxuvMe — Bill Madden (@maddenifico) July 12, 2025

Look Over There!

Brilliant

Good Policy is Good Politics

x 1/ Democrats should hammer Republicans not just for undermining Texas’s & America’s disaster preparedness & response infrastructure, but for having spent decades blocking efforts to mitigate & adapt to the climate crisis.

Misguided Priorities, Lacking Basic Decency

Was it Avoidable?

The Answers Are Obvious

What You Sow…

Telling It Like It Is

x The Democratic party & the climate movement have been “too cautious & polite," says Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI). They should instead be denouncing the fossil fuel industry for running "the biggest & most malevolent propaganda operation the country has ever seen.” No pay wall.
