To My American Cousins, in Solidarity:
Apparently, representatives from your government sent a letter to ours about what we intend to do about our wildfire situation. See video below.
I understand that our country burning down has been ruining your BBQs and your summer plans. I sincerely apologize for that. It’s not like us to be so inconsiderate. I suppose we were a little preoccupied with evacuations, people losing homes, businesses, and livelihoods.
A friend of mine owns a summer cabin resort. She had to shut down for weeks during peak season and lost a ton of revenue. I hope she can recover.
Maybe we should’ve been raking our forest floors more thoroughly. Again, so sorry for the inconvenience. I know summer’s short, and you’d like to enjoy your beaches and campsites with fresh air to breathe.
But here’s the thing: climate change doesn’t respect borders.
And it wasn’t Canada that pulled out of the Paris Climate Accord—twice.
Maybe instead of pointing fingers, we could work together to deal with a planet on fire. Just a few months ago, when L.A. was burning, Canada sent help. Not judgment. Not snarky letters. Just the coolest water bombers you’ve ever seen. When Canada says we’re going to bomb the hell out of something, we mean that very differently than you do. You’re welcome. That’s what friends do.
If you want to send a team to help and be the hero? That would be great. It might even help our currently strained relationship.
But this This isn’t it.
For those wondering if I’m exaggerating, here’s the letter that sparked all this.
Steve Sandford responds with the kind of clarity and class that makes me proud to be Canadian:
I’m still on Team “Half of America Didn’t Vote for This,” but even my patience has its limits. Sorry.
