Why Black Culture is unique [1]

We all know race is a social construct, that does not mean it’s not real. Yes, it is human made, but so is a bed. Some social constructs are easy to deconstruct, not so much one that has evolved and become intertwined with so many other attributes, nationality and culture being chief amongst them and yes, I deliberately sidestepped racism for the moment.
I personally do not think we will ever get rid of race, until everyone on earth shares the same skin tone. Too much history and to easily visual in again my opinion, but that’s a discussion for another entry.
Do you know why Black American culture is unique? Because it is literally the only culture in the world to have arisen out of the social construct that is race. Unlike other cultures born on the wings of countries and nationalities, Black American culture was conceived and birthed by the struggles of a people who did not have a nation.
What do I mean by that? If I say Haitians, you will visualize a Black person, same if I say Nigerian, Congolese, Jamaican, etc.. but if I say US Citizens, the image that you visualize will most likely not be a Black person, even when you know that the US is multiracial, you will still in most cases visualize a white person.
Black Americans were not counted as Americans after a few centuries, they were also not counted as Africans, they were in effect without nation. Worse as their origins were from different parts of Africa, they did not have a common culture. Thus Black Americans had to create their own culture, separate from nationalities and rooted in their common plight.
It is a unique history even for an enslaved people and their descendant, for like I said other enslaved nation could still after freedom have a nationality, not so Black Americans. And that is the part that’s hard for even other Black folks to understand.
All this simply to say, before you get upset at Black folks for holding on to their culture and identity, you should take a moment to reflect upon why it is so precious and unique and wonder at how it was able too take hold, grow and flourish in such a hostile environment.
