The moment Hala Assi realized the value of her work was when the chaos stopped; people started to stand in line for water instead of fighting about it.
"They started trusting that it would still be there tomorrow," Assi explains. "It was one thing they could stop worrying about."
The 45-year-old works as a coordinator in Gaza for Clean Shelter, a humanitarian NGO founded in the early months of Israel's war in Gaza. They started installing toilets in Khan Yunis and running displaced persons camps; the group is now working to restore and expand the city's water distribution grid.
"We started with the need we saw as the most urgent," says executive director Tom Kellner, an Israeli-born literature scholar based in Berlin. Kellner co-founded Clean Shelter with Seba Abudaqa, a Palestinian sustainability professional and community organizer from Gaza who relocated to Munich two years ago.
The pair met through an online dialogue program for Israelis and Palestinians abroad organized by the Jewish-Arab community of Neve Shalom – Wahat al-Salam. The cohort's first meeting was held on October 8, 2023….
