There are a few nice things about concentrating on Regional News on Saturdays. First, the stories have much longer shelf life. Second, I can find a lot of my material from News from the States . Sure, there are others, but it is a great place to get more regional material. Third, I get to learn about places in the country that I’ve never been to and probably won’t get to visit in my lifetime (especially “out east”).

So, I’m happy to do these once a week. Thank you!

Yes, I am too close to this. Sorry. I also spent a good long time reading it, so I’m going to subject you to it, too.

The Minnesota Reformer

A month after assassinations, questions linger about law enforcement response

✂️ Elected officials and law enforcement leaders commended police for the investigation that led to the the capture of the suspected shooter — alive — following the largest manhunt in state history. “To the law enforcement who stand here, and the hundreds who were involved in this, the state of Minnesota owes you a deep debt of gratitude. Thank you,” Gov. Tim Walz said at a press conference announcing the apprehension of the suspect. “You ran towards the danger, and you served the state of Minnesota.” But law enforcement didn’t capture the suspect, Vance Boelter, in time to prevent the murders of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their dog Gilbert. And, while the suspect was on the loose, some elected officials wondered whether they were potential targets, left exposed without any protection. ✂️

I’ll fall into the “I applaud the actions of our law enforcement in this incident” category. They could have done better, but it was a situation that had never occurred before. There was no playbook for it. It was completely novel.

It was well over an hour between the Hoffman shootings and the Hortman assassinations. When I think how far I can go in an hour in the Twin Cities, it’s a relatively long time. But law enforcement still worked quickly in a chaotic situation.

The alleged assassin, Vance Boelter, has pleaded not guilty and is working to move for a speedy trial. Given all of the evidence (the vehicle, the notebooks of names and addresses, the cops witnessing an assassination, a lot of guns...), I’m not sure how he expects to be exonerated.

Boelter’s wife Jennifer says that she was blindsided by this and that it goes against the family’s beliefs. There will be no community support for the family. If I were them, I’d move somewhere far away.

Having read about their income vs. thinking about all of the money they spent (not opulent, but I know how expenses add up), I think there’s a bankruptcy in their future.

Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette are out of the ICU (KARE-11 via MSN). Recovery is going to be a long process. I’m seeing a report via WCCO that they have been released from the hospital. I hope that’s the case, but I’m taking a more conservative approach, even though I’ve found other confirmation they’re out, I won’t burden you with that.

The Hortmans and their dog Gilbert had lain in state in the capitol. Gilbert is the first dog to receive that honor. Thousands showed up. People were leaving treats and toys at Gilbert’s urn.

Gov. Tim Walz calls September special election to fill seat held by slain Rep. Melissa Hortman

Gov. Tim Walz has called a special election for September to fill a House seat left empty by the assassination of Rep. Melissa Hortman. The election for House District 34B, which covers parts of Anoka and Hennepin counties, will be held on Sept. 16. A primary election, if necessary, will be held on Aug. 12, the governor’s office said in a news release. ✂️

There have already been announced candidates. I think it’s probably pretty safe to say that the D’s will hold it.

Maryland Matters

Loss of Key Bridge leads to more potholes, truck traffic in neighborhoods

Since the Francis Scott Key Bridge’s collapse, rerouted trucks have wrought havoc on Dundalk’s narrow roads, causing stress and headaches for motorists and local officials. Even truckers don’t like the situation. “I haven’t seen the roads this bad in a long while,” said Christopher Miskimon, owner of CKM Transport, a trucking firm in Sparrows Point. “The roads used to be taken care of pretty decent, redone and kept up for the most part, but now it just seems it’s just getting worse and worse.” Miskimon said the roads wear down his trucks and cost his company money in repairs. “It just prematurely wears out the parts, your shocks, your tires, your tire alignments, your tie rod ends,” Miskimon said. “It’s not just the big trucks, either. I mean, it’s regular cars, too.” ✂️

I like to revisit the aftermath of stories that have faded from the headlines. This is a great example.

After the I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis in 2007, it took 14 months (NPR) to rebuild it, which I thought was very fast. We Minneapolitans were always thinking about how we were going to get over the Mississippi. The Key bridge is going to take a while and, in the meantime, local roads are going to need a lot of maintenance.

I tend to gloss over the commentary sections in News from the States , but this one is scathing, and I like it!

Nevada Current

The ’80s called. It wants its Democratic sniveling and cowering back.

✂️ As the Times story notes, the newly announced outfit, optimistically called Majority Democrats, is the latest of oodles of groups and committees and PACs consisting of assorted Democratic officials and operatives from coast to coast seeking to discover the secret sauce and A) find out what’s wrong with their party and B) fix it. I haven’t tracked all those efforts but my impression is that a majority of them, especially the better-funded ones, are warmed-over echoes of the old Democratic Leadership Council. During the ‘80s and ‘90s, trying to cope with the conservative ascendancy personified by Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, the DLC was the brain trust driving Democrats to capitulate to Republicans and parrot Republican talking points. As a result, the nation was saddled with an economic policy “debate” spanning the ideological spectrum from A all the way to B, as Democratic surrender cemented a bipartisan dominant narrative of market worship that continues to handcuff policy options to the present day. ✂️

Is Maru OK? We haven’t heard from her for a while.

Iowa Capital Dispatch

Huckabee Sanders highlights legacy with Trump, Iowa ties at Family Leader event

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders celebrated her family’s legacy with the Trump administration and Iowa ties Friday at the Family Leadership Summit. Sanders is the former White House press secretary. Her father, Mike Huckabee is the current U.S. ambassador to Israel. “When the president hired me, I was only the third woman and the very first mom to ever serve that role. I soon discovered that being a mom was actually the greatest preparation I could ever have for the White House press secretary,” Sanders said. ✂️

Blah-blah-blah.

This is only included because I have to wonder what she’s gearing up for, given that this is in Iowa and it’s a long way from Arkansas. Is it just the speaking fees or does she have other ambitions? Surely there’s a $700 IKEA lectern that she can bill the good taxpayers of Arkansas $20k to finance a vacation in Italy or something instead of visiting the Midwest. Suggestions in the comments, please.

More commentary, this time from Idaho (hi Girasol!)

Eruption unknown: The case of Yellowstone National Park’s newly recognized geologic unit

Yellowstone’s geological history is one of the most intensely studied in North America. From a map drawn on a bison pelt by Native American tribes to Bob Christiansen’s 1:125,000 scale map published in 2001, the resolution of Yellowstone maps only continues to evolve. Although these maps — especially those that show the geology — have created a solid foundation for tourists and researchers alike, many remote or poorly exposed areas of Yellowstone have been generalized at broad scales, now requiring geologists to revisit these regions. Their goal? To improve our understanding of all rocks that make up Yellowstone’s geologic history. But what happens when a rock previously mapped as a younger eruption is dated using new techniques and returns an age that doesn’t match anything in the geologic record? This is exactly what happened recently, when Montana State University geologists identified a new geological unit in the west part of Yellowstone National Park. ✂️

As someone with an interest in science, I’ve been curious (and concerned) about a severe geological event in Yellowstone for a decade or two. TCG will probably be interested in this, too.

Source New Mexico

‘Expecting it to be ugly,’ Ruidoso braces for new round of potential floods

Forecasters are warning that much of eastern New Mexico, including Ruidoso, is under risk of flooding, with potential rainfalls as much as two to three inches per hour projected this weekend. “We could see that rainfall all along eastern New Mexico, including Clovis and Clayton,” said Nico Porcili, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service. “So if heavy rainfall rates happen over one of those populated areas, it could definitely cause some flooding.” The flood watch lasts from Friday evening into the weekend. Ruidoso remains at high risk with its already-saturated ground, debris, and the water-repellant soil from surrounding burn scars. The mountain village experienced deadly flash flooding earlier in the week, which displaced hundreds, required 65 swift water rescues and resulted in the deaths of three people. ✂️

But I’m sure that ICE Barbie and FEMA have learned their lesson in Texas. Heckuva job, Barbie!

Vermont Digger

Internal communications reveal Vermont prisons’ frustrations working with ICE

Greg Hale didn’t understand why border patrol officers from Maine were showing up at the prison he oversees in St. Albans town. He was used to federal immigration authorities bringing detainees in from Vermont’s northern border. But this signaled a shift. The superintendent of Northwest State Correctional Facility, Hale had previously informed his contacts at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that Vermont didn’t want to become the feds’ hub in the Northeast. “Apparently they are disregarding that,” he noted in a memo to his higher-ups at the Vermont Department of Corrections in early March. The emails reveal mounting frustration within Vermont’s corrections system as ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection have increasingly relied on the state’s prisons to warehouse detained immigrants. New demands, arrivals at all hours and a rare disease are just some of the challenges Vermont’s prisons have faced while working with federal immigration authorities. ✂️

This is a really powerful article that I suggest that you read if you can spare the time. It was worth digging in a little bit to find it.

Today is...

World Rum Day

Distilled from either the molasses or juice that comes from sugarcane, rum is a deliciously sweet liquor that is enjoyed the world over. With a reputation that is related to pirates and revolutions, rum brings with it a unique and fascinating background. World Rum Day celebrates the rum itself and its somewhat-sordid past, as well as the community of makers, bartenders and drinkers whose lives are made a little better by rum!

National Simplicity Day

It’s time to get back to basics and celebrate National Simplicity Day on July 12! The holiday falls on this date every year to honor the birthday of Henry David Thoreau, who was born on this day in 1817. So read on for some modern-day tips on how to celebrate National Simplicity Day. As Thoreau himself said: “As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.”

I’d add a video, but I think I’ll keep it simple.

===

Etch A Sketch Day

Etch A Sketch Day is celebrated annually on July 12. Etch A Sketch is a mechanical toy used for drawing. It’s an invention by André Cassagnes from France, and was manufactured by the Ohio Art Company. The Etch A Sketch was introduced on July 12, 1960 and sold for $2.99 (equivalent to $26 today). Being a classic, it has entertained and delighted generations of kids. Etch A Sketch Day is celebrated mainly by organizations, and everyone is encouraged to be creative and have fun.

National Pecan Pie Day

We’re simply nutty over today’s honoree, National Pecan Pie Day on July 12. It’s pretty easy to get behind a day dedicated to one of our favorite desserts. Indeed, 90% of Americans surveyed believe eating a slice of pie is one of life’s simple pleasures, indulging in 186 million commercially sold pies every year! People who prefer pecan pie over the many other types of pies describe themselves as thoughtful and analytical. We’re not sure if this still holds true for those who add ice cream or whipped cream but, nonetheless, it’s time to celebrate the delicious dessert today!
