A Threat to... Decency? Trump's Latest Citizenship Threat and Tantrum [1]

In a move that surprised absolutely no one, President Donald J. Trump, ever the titan of tasteful discourse, took to his personal megaphone, Truth Social, this morning to deliver a truly monumental proclamation. At precisely 9:42 AM EST, the leader of the free world declared his "serious consideration" of revoking the U.S. citizenship of none other than the legendary "Threat to Humanity," Rosie O'Donnell. Because, apparently, her existence is "not in the best interests of our Great Country" and she "should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her." Truly, a beacon of American diplomacy and legal scholarship, our President.

Let's rewind, shall we, to the glorious genesis of this epic rivalry. It all began, as many of Trump's long-held grievances do, with a woman daring to voice an opinion contrary to his own. In 2006, during her stint on "The View," Ms. O'Donnell, in a shocking display of journalistic integrity (or perhaps just common sense), questioned Trump's moral authority regarding a Miss USA controversy. She had the audacity to suggest that a man who'd "left the first wife, had an affair, left the second wife, had an affair, had kids both times," might not be the ideal "moral compass for 20-year-olds in America." The horror!

This, of course, launched a feud that has since provided endless fodder for late-night comedians and a window into the mind of a man who apparently never forgets, or forgives, a perceived slight. From "fat pig" to "loser" to the current "Threat to Humanity," their back-and-forth has been a masterclass in mature, presidential-level banter. Rosie even packed up and moved to Ireland after Trump's second inauguration, presumably to avoid the sheer awesomeness radiating from Washington, D.C. One can only imagine the disappointment when she realized her physical distance hadn't actually erased her from his mental Rolodex of enemies.

Can a Tweet (or Truth) Revoke Citizenship? (Spoiler: No)

Now, onto the truly scintillating legal question: Can a U.S. President, with a flick of his powerful wrist and a furious Truth Social post, strip a natural-born citizen of their citizenship? Well, if you're a fan of things like "the Constitution" and "precedent" and "the rule of law," the answer is a resounding, earth-shattering NO .

Rosie O'Donnell was born in the United States, which, thanks to the pesky Fourteenth Amendment, makes her a citizen. The Supreme Court has been quite clear on this point, reiterating time and again that citizenship is a fundamental right, not a privilege to be doled out or rescinded based on whether someone agrees with the President's personal tastes or is deemed a "Threat to Humanity" by his infallible judgment.

The process of revoking citizenship, known as denaturalization, is an incredibly rare and legally arduous process, almost exclusively reserved for naturalized citizens who obtained their citizenship through fraud. It involves federal court proceedings and a mountain of "clear, convincing, and unequivocal evidence." Simply being "not in the best interests of our Great Country" (as defined by one man's perpetually bruised ego) doesn't quite cut it. One might even argue it's a tad unconstitutional. But then, what's a little constitutional crisis between friends when there's a perceived enemy to own?

The Imperial Nature of the Presidency (and Its Commander-in-Chief's Ego)

This latest pronouncement, of course, speaks volumes about the enduring qualities that make Donald J. Trump, well, Donald J. Trump. His deep and abiding disdain for the law is, frankly, breathtaking in its consistency. The idea that a president can unilaterally decide who is, and isn't, an American citizen based on personal grievances is a direct assault on the very principles of American democracy and the concept of an independent judiciary.

It's a glorious display of imperial hubris, where the President is not merely the chief executive, but also the ultimate arbiter of who deserves to breathe American air. And the pettiness? Oh, the exquisite pettiness! To use the immense power of the presidency to settle a two-decade-old celebrity spat is truly a testament to his singular focus on the issues that truly matter to the American people. Forget inflation, international crises, or healthcare; the real danger to the republic is apparently Rosie O'Donnell.
