YOU CAN REPOST IT AS COMMENT in the DIARY

WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING in the DIARY that you LIKE

EVERY PERSON WHO COMMENTS WILL GET A CRITTER

THE PERSON who MAKES the FIRST COMMENT WILL GET TWO CRITTERS

(Or NOT As the CASE MAY BE)

YOU WILL FIND in the DIARIES a LOT of POLITICS

For the last couple days there have been numerous reports from the Abrego court case in which Judge Xinis sounds like a professional and the DOJ sounds like it’s sending loyalists rather than lawyers.

x Xinis: Let me stop you. You're making the plaintiff's point. This is precisely why they need preliminary relief. Because the gov won't say what's happening. You're saying he'll be treated exactly like anyone else....that's not credible...I'm just telling you, I'm not buying that. — Anna Bower (@annabower.bsky.social) July 11, 2025 at 8:10 AM

x Judge Xinis…is big mad this morning. At one point during Rossman's oral argument, she asks DOJ for the immigration detainer she requested yesterday. Khojasteh says it exists, they’re working on getting it, but they don't have it. Xinis is dubious, says they’ve destroyed presumption of regularity. — Anna Bower (@annabower.bsky.social) July 11, 2025 at 7:35 AM

x Focusing on the specifics of this case, Rossman adds that the government hasn't identified a 3rd country to which they are contemplating removing Abrego. Judge Xinis: Mr. Giles came in here without having even talked to office that would handle case...it's insulting to my intelligence. — Anna Bower (@annabower.bsky.social) July 11, 2025 at 7:46 AM

Speaking of unqualified loyalists:

x Deputy Attorney General (and Trump’s former criminal defense lawyer) Emil Bove should be suspended or disbarred from the practice of law, and not appointed to a circuit judgeship on a United States Court of Appeals. It’s not even a close call.

Is immigration a good thing or a bad thing? We know what most Democrats think. What strikes me with this poll is that, as long as Gallup has taken a fair cross section of Democrats and Republicans, this shows that a significant number of Republicans would now agree.

x Gallup has new polling on immigration. Topline findings:

-Americans hate Trump's immigration policy (35% approve, 62% disapprove)

-Share who say immigration is a "good thing" for the country just hit an all-time high (79%) news.gallup.com/poll/692522/...

How to beat ICE:

x A local NYC baseball coach says he fended off ICE agents during a recent practice. Youman Wilder said caught feds questioning youth about where they're from & country of origin, so, he told feds to back off & kids to not answer! Shoutout all of our local heroes!

x Bass: I just signed an executive directive that puts all city departments and leadership on notice to protect Angelenos—essentially from the federal government. We’re also filing a FOIA request because we want to know: Who are these masked men, and why are they masked in the first place?

How not to beat ICE. Officers are easily intimidated. Assaulting an officer is easy to do without realizing it. If you’re protesting ICE, be careful out there.

x New: DHS tells police to brace for the anti-ICE movement to grow much bigger in threat bulletins last month that lists ordinary behavior, like riding a skateboard or livestreaming, as threatening to law enforcement. By me w/ records by @propertyofthepeople.org:

If you are protesting Trump, though, here’s a great new word for your sign.

x Let's go a step further than @schumer.senate.gov did in deleting the words "one big beautiful bill" from the Republican budget monstrosity. Let's all agree to call it, and all its ugly consequences, Trumpcare. www.offmessage.net/p/try-callin...

Trump is pushing cryptocurrency and resisting laws to regulate it. Wondering what to make of crypto? Paul Krugman says its best use is for crime.

x As Trump's family businesses invest heavily in crypto... -He's instructing the government to ease up on regulating the industry

-His SEC is dropping major lawsuits against crypto companies

-His DOJ terminated a team focused on crypto crimes. See the problem? — Robert Reich (@rbreich.bsky.social) July 11, 2025 at 9:46 AM

x If Congress is going to ratify a sweeping crypto regulatory regime, it is critical we shut down the President’s superhighway of crypto corruption.

This is what happens when government grants are canceled, either because DOGE didn’t understand what they were for, or because they qualified as “DEI” because they might have involved someone who isn’t white.

x NEW: Sec. Noem has now admits "last mile" disaster communications weren't up to par in the Texas catastrophe. But while bodies were still being recovered on Tuesday DHS canceled a $3 million grant focused on improving precisely those kinds of "last mile" comms. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/dhs-c...

A small bite of good news for freedom of the press.

x JUST IN: Judge restrains LAPD from using nonlethal munitions against journalists, detaining or assaulting journalists covering protests or restricting their movements under most circumstances.. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

There’s too much more to fit here! Kennedy being Kennedy. The Epstein files that once were and now are not. Republican attempts at state and federal level to control the vote. Musk’s AI named Grok that went racist and declared itself in “Mechahitler mode” this week before it got its programming adjusted. Musk’s new American Party. (Coincidentally, the last time we had an “American Party” they were popularly called the Know Nothings.)

===

Charlie Chaplin understands exactly what’s going on in the US today, although he said this in 1940.

x The first time Charlie Chaplin used his voice in a film, he wielded it to forcefully condemn the rising forces of fascism around the globe. Will we listen to his words today?

This is crazy but it makes me smile:

Today is the birthday of E. B. White (1899-1985), who wrote Stuart Little and Charlotte’s Web. Also of Theodore Harold Maiman (1927-2007) who created the first working laser. Today is the birthday of the Marine Corps in 1798. On this day in 1804 Aaron Burr wounded Alexander Hamilton in the famous duel. Babe Ruth first appear in major league baseball on this day in 1914. And Harper Lee published To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960.
