A Fantasy of a Nobel Peace Prize Award [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-07-11

On the heels of recently witnessing a war criminal nominating another war criminal for the Nobel Peace Prize and the news yesterday that the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has been sanctioned by the US Government — a little fantasy has developed overnight.

What if the Norwegian Nobel Committee were to award the Peace Prize to Ms Albanese next year (the deadline for nominations for this year’s Prize was 1 February)? How much would that piss off Netanyahu and Trump, both of them common criminals — as well as alleged war criminals?

Rubio accused Albanese of engaging in actions he described as illegitimate, specifically her efforts to encourage the ICC to investigate U.S. and Israeli officials, companies and executives. "Today I am imposing sanctions on UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for her illegitimate and shameful efforts to prompt International Criminal Court action against US and Israeli officials, companies, and executives." Rubio said in a post on X. The sanctions forbid U.S. nationals and companies from doing business with Albanese.

Who can nominate?

A nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize is only considered valid if submitted by a person who meets certain criteria. According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize is considered valid if it is submitted by a person who falls within one of the following categories, a personal application for an award will not be considered: Members of national assemblies and national governments (cabinet members/ministers) of sovereign states as well as current heads of state

Members of The International Court of Justice in The Hague and The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague

Members of l'Institut de Droit International

Members of the International Board of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom

University professors, professors emeriti and associate professors of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, theology, and religion; university rectors and university directors (or their equivalents); directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes

Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

Members of the main board of directors or its equivalent of organizations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

Current and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee (proposals by current members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after 1 February)

Former advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Committee Unless otherwise stated the term 'members' shall be understood as current (sitting) members. These criteria were revised in April 2018

Criteria for nominators

I will contact a couple of members of the Norwegian Parliament with this suggestion. Maybe you can contact eligible persons in your country?

Meanwhile, it is a satisfying fantasy. Have a wonderful weekend.
