Steve Scalise wants Iranian immigrant to get “a fair shake” [1]

Iranian wife, mother, and community volunteer Mandonna “Donna” Kashanian, 64, was taken into ICE custody last month while gardening in the yard of her New Orleans home. Kashanian has lived in the U.S. for the last 47 years, and her husband and daughter are both U.S. citizens. She was allowed to remain in the U.S. as long as she checked in regularly with immigration authorities, which she has done faithfully.
Following community support for her, Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who represents the district where Kashanian lives, intervened on her behalf, asking the Department of Homeland Security to give her “a fair shake.” Because of his behind-the-scenes involvement, Kashanian was released.
DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in an emailed statement that “the facts of this case have not changed.” “Mandonna Kashanian is in this country illegally,” McLaughlin said. “She exhausted all her legal options.”
So, while Kashanian might be free from ICE custody for now, DHS still plans to deport her. I can’t help thinking about all the “illegal” immigrants who don't have a sitting member of Congress to advocate for them. Where is their “fair shake”? Who is in their corner?
Republican Rep. Stephanie Hilferty, who represents Kashanian’s community, said she had been a “devoted mother and wife, a caretaker, neighbor and dedicated volunteer.” Much the same could be said of thousands of immigrants who don’t have Kashanian’s level of support. What becomes of them?
