Our letter to David Paterson regarding Mamdani [1]

Back in 2008, after the California Supreme Court permitted same sex marriages and before Proposition 8 banned them, my husband and I decided to make our marriage legal. We made arrangements for a service followed by a reception at my sister's house near San Diego. New York did not yet permit same sex marriage but our then governor, David Paterson, said that the state would honor marriages performed out of state. My husband knew the governor from years of lobbying for tenant rights. On the day of our ceremony, a courier arrived with a letter of congratulation from David Paterson. In the wake of his recent attack on Mamdani, we have sent him the following letter:

Dear David,
On August 2, 2008, the day of our legal marriage in California, a courier arrived with a letter of congratulations from you and your wife. We understood your gesture to be an acknowledgment of Michael’s decades of work in support of tenants’ rights in New York as well as an affirmation of your stance in favor of marriage equality. It was heartening to have a governor who was not afraid to stand on the right side of history in the fight for equality.
Now, nearly 17 years later, we are disheartened and disappointed to see you attack Zohran Mamdani, a man who is now leading a reinvigorated fight for tenants, workers, and queer folks, and who has brought a whole new generation of New Yorkers into the fight. We call upon you as a Democrat to endorse Zohran as the overwhelming winner of the Democratic primary for mayor. Please reclaim your position on the right side of history.
