“It’s all fake. There’s no deadline. It’s a self-imposed landmark in this theatrical show, and that’s where we are.” The preceding quote is from an unnamed White House source about President Trump’s tariff policy, who, one can only guess, values his anonymity to avoid retaliation. But such is the nature of the Trump administration's bluster, promises, lies, and finger-pointing. This revelation is on the heels of the Big Beautiful Bill. Mr. Trump either lied or was so uninformed that he misrepresented key content, specifically Medicaid. On more than one occasion, Mr. Trump said, “We’ll love and cherish” Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, the last of which insures more than 70 million Americans. “We’re not going to do anything with that, unless we can find some abuse or waste,” Trump said. “The people won’t be affected. It will only be more effective and better.” In the interim of the effective date of the Bill in 2026, we learn more each day that Mr. Trump’s chief concern was passing the legislation so he could have a Fourth of July brag show at the White House.
No one is surprised by his self-aggrandizing love affair with himself, but his hubris affects us all. The nearly 400 million taxpayer dollars that will be used to retrofit his sky palace, given to him by the Qatar government, not only violates the emoluments clause of the Constitution, but it is a middle finger to hard-working Americans. Like most things, Trump's blatant ignoring of American values is overshadowed by his next atrocious money grab. As a native of Washington, DC (go Commanders), the embarrassment he subjected the United States military to in what should have been a revered moment for the 250-year celebration of the United States Army turned into a sparsely attended, slovenly coordinated birthday party for President Trump. His desire to have a military show that competes with those of allies and enemies alike is beneath the dignity of the country and its standards.
Yesterday, Donald Trump avoided questions about accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein by berating a reporter for asking trivial questions in light of the Texas tragedy and war. Later, Mr. Trump waxed on about gold leaf paint at the White House and feigned ignorance when asked about the change of policy in giving weapons to Ukraine after just a week earlier denying them. MSNBC anchor Lawrence O’Donnell summed up the moment succinctly when he asked on his late-night show, The Last Word, “Imagine how stupid you have to be as president of the United States to think that when asked a question about something important that you’re supposed to know, your answer is ‘I don’t know. Why don’t you tell me?’ said O’Donnell.
The outburst, disrespect, and rebuking of reporters, despite being a convenient hiding place for his lack of knowledge of global and domestic affairs, is grist for the MAGA mill. Verbally punching at the media feeds an anger from the MAGA base to put the elites in their place. Trump is often credited as authentic, but in reality, he is a sideshow barker convincing you that your hard-earned money is best spent on his show.
