Food Availability in the US to take Major Hits Soon [1]

I just read two connected stories about food availability, rising costs and hits to the US’ food supply chain that are concerning.

The first is from CBSNews.

Beef prices in the U.S. are searingly high. Here's why.

www.cbsnews.com/…

The primary reasons discussed in the article are that demand is outstripping supply while our population is growing. The number of beef cattle hasn’t been this low since the 1960s. Herds have been shrinking and drought has played a role in that.

Other factors are high grain prices, tariffs and rising interest rates.

Both Pork and Chicken remain cheaper than Beef. But their availability will be constrained by the gist of the second article.

The second story is from Politico.

‘Essential isn’t a strong enough word’: Loss of foreign workers begins to bite US economy

Trump’s immigration policy is taking a toll on more than farms.

www.politico.com/…

Here we’re looking at the effects of the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration.

That’s because foreign-born workers, or their relatives, have become critical in some labor sectors. “Essential isn’t a strong enough word,” said Matt Teagarden, head of the Kansas Livestock Association. “It is some version of an immigrant, maybe not first generation, but second or third generation, that are just critical to that work.”

Another immigration factor that is having a major impact is Trump’s removal of protected status for many different groups. Companies such as Disney and Amazon have already fired many people because of this.

The administration exacerbated the situation Monday, revoking legal status for approximately 76,000 people from Honduras and Nicaragua – and eliminating their work authorizations. It had previously done so for Haitians, Afghans, Venezuelans and Cameroonians.

And for ALL aspects of our food supply chains, immigrants are the linchpins. If they are not being directly rounded up then they have become rightfully frightened.

So… If you are able to stock up as you can. And I hope that many of you planted vegetable gardens
