I went out to dinner tonight with my mom and some of her friends. I planned on skipping it because one of the couples are supporters of the Fascist Felon. I really only went because I like the restaurant they picked. All of the couples in the group had at least one person who was a NYC public school teacher in Brooklyn where my dad taught. As far as I know, none of them have lived in NYC in 50 or 60 years, if ever. None of them have worked in there either in more than 20 years since they retired. In fact, I don't think any of them have family who work in the public sector there besides my sister who is a NYC public school special education teacher.
We made it through about 75% of dinner without politics coming up until somehow the topic of the NYC mayoral election appeared. The Felon supporting couple, who like my mother and I, are Jews, went on about how Mamdani is antisemite because he's Muslim. I pointed out 10s of thousands of Jews in heavily Jewish areas as well as Brad Lander endorsed or voted for Mamdani. The wife replied, "They are morons."
Had my emotions not gotten the better of me I would have replied, "So supporting someone who called Chuck Schumer no longer a Jew but a Palestinian or referring to Jews as shylocks is someone who isn't an antisemite?" Instead, I just said, "You are a moron." Not my finest hour.
The point is stick with your gut feeling when it says don't go out with Felon supporters. It never ends well.
