Good Trouble Comes to El Segundo: And it was no Trouble at All [1]

El Segundo, CA, is a very small L.A. area suburb tucked between LAX to the north, the Chevron oil refinery to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It is known for it's small town vibe, good schools and successful youth sports programs.

Locals used to refer to it as "Mayberry by the sea." The old comedy series “Sanford and Son” sometimes made a humorous reference to El Segundo regarding its lack of racial diversity. Things have changed since then, but it remains solidly Republican.

I happen to think small town protests like this are more fun. At the big city events you are part of a sea of humanity -- and what difference would one person, more or less, make anyway? The smaller demonstrations provide a better chance to interact with others and make connections. Somebody might actually notice if you DON'T show up.

Also, those who have never been to a political demonstration before might feel more comfortable at a smaller, more local gathering. Social media could do something constructive by publicizing the smaller events that most local news media ignore. Sending links of videos like this to friends, family and co-workers could be a great way to get others involved -- a way to convince people to get off the couch and get active.

Anyway, the day after the 4th of July provided perfect weather and a spirited crowd of protesters determined to let folks know this movement is here to stay.

Democracy will be defended.
