Congratulations Lisa Murkowski! [1]

I have always admired Senator Murkowski. I am not her constituent and I am a registered Independent. I saw her as a model of strength and courage for young women everywhere She held her ground against Trump throughout his fist term; while generally supporting his agenda but standing up for what she deemed the “right” thing to do. Senator Murkowski did not hestiate to vote against Trump’s wishes when she needed to do so. In fact, doing so did earn her a primary competitor. She won the election running as an independent. Unquestionably, and rightly so, Senator Murkowski has earned the support of her constituents. She has proved to be tenacious and courageous on their behalf, as well a highly skilled polititian. While she took care of her Alaskan constituents she also seemed to see the big picture of the puzzle that is America. Then came Trump’s second term and the “Big Beautiful Bill”. I admit, I was confident that she would continue her tenacious and courageous history by voting no on the bill.
What a day for Senator Murkowski! She can be congratulated for sparing her constituents many of the devastating effects of the bill and one has to admire her ability to leverage her vote on Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill to get more for Alaska, the state she represents. Murkowski is indeed a polished negotiator with the determination to get the most for her state from a bill to which she had clearly declared her opposition. Her level of negotiating skills need to be acknowledged. If this were a bill that was going to pass without her vote then it would be worthy of sincere congratulations and acknowledgement of her negotiating prowess. Unfortunately, this is not the case. After affirming that she planned to vote “no” on the bill, her vote to pass the bill was the decider…she could have killed this very ugly bill and by doing so would have provided even more for her state with the bonus of sparing so many other states the decimating effects of the cuts to Medicaid, SNAP etc. But she didn’t…..so she has tarnished her reputation for always doing the right thing by being a Senator who only cared about protecting her state when she could have protected the whole country. It certainly can take courage to stand up for what is the right thing to do especially when there can be a personal cost (and surely there would have been one). A pity for the country she could not have learned about courage from John McCain. History will not be kind.
