Trump less than one month ago: “We want to wean off of FEMA . . . we’re moving it back to the states. Now if they can’t handle it, they shouldn’t be governor.”
Also Trump less than one month ago: “The FEMA thing has not been a very successful experiment, very, very expensive, and it doesn’t get the job done.”
Also Trump less than a month ago: “After the hurricane season we’ll start phasing [FEMA] out.”
Trump Today: “I have declared a major disaster . . . Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will coordinate Federal assistance efforts and designate specific areas eligible for such assistance.”
Also Trump Today:
Reporter: “Are you still planning to phase out FEMA?”
Trump: “FEMA is something we can talk about later, right now they are busy working.”
I’m sure a hobbled and reduced FEMA is working as hard as it can. Billions have been cut from the agency and its staff has been reduced by about 30% under the Trump/DOGE cuts.
FEMA will be working without the head of its National Response Coordination Center, Jeremy Greenberg, who resigned less than a month ago after Trump announced his plans to phase out FEMA. The National Response Coordination Center is FEMA’s 24-hour war room for responding to disasters. It deploys search and rescue teams, assists hospitals that have to evacuate, and ships food and water to emergency sites. Stuff central Texas needs without delay.
The “acting” current head of FEMA itself, David Richardson, has no prior experience at all in disaster relief. He is a former military officer who served in Trump’s first term as the DHS Secretary for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction. Richardson has only been in acting FEMA head since May, replacing the prior Trump appointee Cameron Hamilton, who was fired the day after testifying to Congress that he didn’t think FEMA should be eliminated. Richardson recently stated that he didn’t know the United States had a hurricane season.
You can’t make this up. It’s so horrible it could be funny but for the fact that people are dying from it.
