The Old Testament prophet, Jeremiah, was an interesting dude who lived in interesting times; times not so different from ours in many ways. According to Bible Study Facts, Jeremiah was a prophet in the kingdom of Judah, right before Judah fell to Babylon and went into captivity. Jeremiah warned a crumbling nation of its impending demise – a warning it did not heed. Sound familiar?
Jeremiah’s messages condemned false worship and social injustice, and called for repentance. But no one listened. And the people paid a big price as Judah was destroyed. Jeremiah preached that God would stand by those who listened. But, as you know, there is a saying, “God helps those who help themselves.”
I wrote the following thinking of Jeremiah and what someone who listened and heeded his warnings may have thought.
“MUST”
Must I stand naked so the rich may have robes?
Must I starve so the rich may feast?
Must I sleep in the dirt so the rich may have mansions?
Must I limp and cough so the rich may indulge?
Must I endure a lifetime of labor so the rich may profit?
Must I pay taxes so the rich may not?
Must I rise against the rich so the poor may live?
I can.
I will.
I must.
