The recent tragedy that took the lives of 21 children and over 50 adults in Texas. This is not just heartbreaking, it’s unacceptable. As families mourn, we are forced to confront an uncomfortable truth: better forecasting could have saved lives. This isn’t just about unpredictable weather. It’s about priorities, funding, and political choices that have real-life consequences.
Texas is no stranger to extreme weather, yet at a critical time when forecasting technology and emergency preparedness should be improving, the state saw significant funding cuts. And for what? To funnel more money toward border patrol and enforcement, moves are designed to score political points rather than protect the lives of its own citizens, particularly its most vulnerable.
This tragedy lays bare the cost of misguided priorities. Voters may have supported those cuts under the impression of safety or fiscal responsibility, but when children die as a result, it’s time to reassess. Weather doesn’t wait. It doesn’t check party lines. And it doesn’t care who’s in office.
Now is the time for Texas leaders and communities to re-evaluate where the funding is going. Weather forecasting and emergency infrastructure must become a top priority, not a budgetary afterthought.
