Should we give up? [1]

I’m seeing lots of posts on BlueSky that basically say the democracy is over, we are done. Social Security is gone. Human rights are gone. We shouldn’t celebrate Independence Day because we lost it all. It makes me furious.

Yes, we are in a bad place. People are being rounded up and shipped off to horrible places. Rights are being abused. Women are expected to be ok with dying if we get pregnant. Laws are being defied, bad laws are being passed. People will lose essential services. All true. But to just throw our hands up in the air and quit? Let them win? That’s not the answer.

This country has done a lot of bad things. Starting with massacring Native Americans, enslaving Black people, denying women basic rights, and moving on to starting unnecessary wars, interning Japanese Americans, blacklisting people for political beliefs, and on and on. We had to have a civil war to end slavery.

But we have also done a lot of really great things. We did end slavery and Jim Crow. Women have more rights than we did even forty years ago. Gay rights are here. Sure, they are all under attack, but what did we expect? Are we going to just throw up our hands and let them win because they got temporary control? Are we that weak? Are we the snowflakes the nut jobs accuse us of being? I don’t think so.

The other side has been planning this for a long time. We now have to get busy-and we have gotten busy-and let them know they are not going to get our country without a fight. To quote Gandalf, it's not up to anyone to choose when they live, but rather what they do with the time they are given. This is our time.
