I understand that you oppose the authoritarian regime. Yay, I’m with you on that. But what is your position in this striated society that you can advise that historic inequality, the dismantling of constitutional rights, ICE abductions and renditions and increasingly deadly climate change are distractions? I don’t think the Democratic message can be simple because the situations people find themselves overwhelmed by aren’t simple.
Mamdani won because he focused on an economy that works for everyone. He won because he also focused on equality. He proposed transitions to green energy and won the votes of young people aged 18 to 34. They are the ones who will be forced, through no fault of their own, to deal with the brutal consequences of man-made climate change. Green energy transition matters greatly to them and their elders.
He appealed to young people aged 18 to 34 by focusing on equality not just in economics but in all the other matters that acutely affect the economy. He won because he not only proposed free public transit, an economic policy but because he also demanded an end to the Israeli government’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. War is an economic policy. Inequality is an economic policy. He came out against deadly policies and won.
He won with young people aged 18 to 34 because he also believes in full access to healthcare and the right of young women to bodily autonomy. Those issues — vital to the life and wellbeing of everyone but especially to young people - were included in his campaign. Those issues were not excluded and he won because of that.
The majority of young people that I know care about their human rights as much as they care about the cost of living. To say it has to be one or the other is morally wrong and practically wrong as well.
Mamdani showed the Democratic Party what they should focus on in order to win yet their top centrists and strategists spent last weekend maligning him. If they fail to heed what “messages” got Mamdani the win, I can see a Democratic Socialist birthing itself to include all those left out in the suggested narrowing of the Democratic tent.
To see the truth of this, look at the growing movements of The Poor Peoples’ Campaign, Indivisible, local immigrant rights groups, people signing on to watch out for ICE and warn their communities. These issues are a matter of life v. death, freedom v. incarceration to those being targeted by authoritarians and those who witness these assaults on our freedoms.
