This is not the only post about the Declaration of Independence today. At the No Kings rally, I had a sign that had the first paragraph of this excerpt (it is in bold)) from the document we celebrate today.
I seems more relevant today than any time in my life.

The history of our present King is one of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny.
To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world. He has
– refused his Assent to Laws necessary for the public good;
– obstructed the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations;
– obstructed the Administration of Justice;
– endeavored to make Judges dependent on his Will alone;
– erected a multitude of New Offices and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance;
– kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures;
– affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power;
– cut off our Trade with all parts of the world;
– denied in many cases the benefits of Trial by Jury;
– transported many beyond Seas for pretended offences;
– abolished our most valuable Laws, and altered fundamentally the Forms of our Governments;
– declared us out of his Protection and waging War against us;
– excited domestic insurrections amongst us.
