No Crying Into A Fifth On The Fourth [1]

On July 4, 1776 we declared our independence from England, and on July 4, 1863 the Union army defeated the Confederate army in two great battles, Gettysburg and Vicksburg. As momentous as those events were, they were significant movements in the right direction rather than conclusive victories that ended the conflicts. Much hard fighting remained to be done in both wars. Furthermore, the struggle for democracy and human rights continue to this very day, and the outcome is as important now as it has ever been.
I am not exaggerating when I say that Trump and the R-fascist party pose the greatest threat to human rights and our democracy since the civil war. What makes this threat so potent and so frustrating is the utter stupidity of voters who think they are too busy to pay any attention to politics and foolishly lash out almost randomly at politicians who they do not think are doing enough for them while actually rewarding the politicians who are actively screwing them. There are polls showing that many voters still do not know anything about the Greedy Old Plutocrat’s Big Butt-ugly Bill that was just passed by a Republican congress, and it is far too likely that those voters will remain ignorant until after the midterms, which is when the provisions of this horrendous bill will take effect. Even then far too many of those ignorant voters will probably blame whoever has control of congress at the time that they (the voters) lose their health care and the price of electricity and so many other goods and services go through the roof.
This is enough to make responsible voters throw their hands in the air, drink a fifth on the fourth, and prey for divine intervention. I suppose such prayers will not hurt, but, like the fifth, they will not solve the problem either. What is called for is action! Hopelessness is caused by a feeling that we have lost control and that there is nothing we can do to make things better. Action helps to alleviate the resulting despair. When we start fighting the battles, our mind set changes from what is the use to damn it, I will make a difference! Like our founding fathers who risked being hanged, and the patriots who fought to end slavery and to keep our country from disintegrating, we must not lose!
There are demonstrations taking place today! More demonstrations are in the works for the days, weeks, and months ahead. Most of the Democratic clubs have informative websites that you can find by searching for Democratic clubs near you. You do not even have to join the clubs; you will be more than welcomed if you just show up for the demonstrations. The more we demonstrate the harder it is for the lazy to remain ignorant! This is what we can do now. Next year we can do far more.
The best way to celebrate democracy is to defend it. Now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of their country. 01/27- 8647!
