Kitchen Table Kibitzing 7.4.2025: Another "every vote matters" story [1]

Welcome! This evening, I’m starting off with a local election story. On June 30th, a coin flip decided a city council runoff election in Pasadena, Texas.

x A favorable coin toss Monday gave Bianca Valerio another term on the Pasadena City Council. She and challenger Bruce Leamon tied with 272 votes apiece in a June 7 runoff election.

Located in southeast Harris County (Greater Houston area), Pasadena has a population of approximately 150,000. The city’s population is approximately 67% Hispanic or Latino, and Valerio was the first Latina elected to the city council in 2021.

The runoff pitted Valerio, the current incumbent, against Leamon, a former incumbent who was term-limited out after the 2019 election. As the local ABC News station reported, “fewer than one in 10 registered voters cast a ballot” in the runoff election for this city council seat.

I know the KTK community votes, so this is merely another “every vote matters” story to share with reluctant potential voters.

Also, here’s a Southern Poverty Law Center’s post to share: “A life-changing habit: Five reasons why you should vote in every election” (May 2024).

x I am on vacation now, so no classic pictures these days. But here is a view of the beautiful Ukrainian Carpathians, near mountain Smotrych.

Finally, here’s today’s diary by Meteor Blades: A few words from The Sioux Chef, Sean Sherman, about July 4th: 'This Land Was Never F*cking Yours'

I’m going to guess that a few people here aren’t going to like these words of Sean Sherman, known as The Sioux Chef, and they won’t much care for the rest of them either. That’s okay. It’s offered as an opinion about Fourth of July that you almost never hear from anyone especially on the day itself. But it is an opinion that is far from his alone. The entire essay appears at his substack.

Please read and rec to help keep MB’s diary on the reclist!
